Hello,

I must plead guilty for my baby boomer generation. Though the word has been in the English language for over 1000 years it has only really come to life in the past 45. In the early 60's. late 50's the word was considered very filthy and if I said it to my parents I'd be spitting teeth. Only a prostitute or whore would use the language as well with respect to the girls of those times. The hippy and beat nick generation started using it a lot just to shock the establishment of the time which was very effective at first but after 40 years it is so overused with dozens of meanings and I do not like it myself since it has become so tiresome to hear.
Some people speak and every third or fourth word is the f.

All in all it shows a poor vocabulary and inability to express yourself so I avoid using it at all costs.

I use it when I am walking in the dark through the house in the middle of the night and stub my toe. Why? because "heavens to Betsy" just does not do it for me in that situation. When someone is extremely under the influence of recreational substances saying "extremely under the influence" just does not convey the feeling. There are other times that saying copulate with me harder or I am going to perform the act of coitus upon you until you beg for mercy lack sponateity and sincerity,. not to mention they are more likely to cause laughter or break the mood in some other way.

Using the F word is not always about smallness of vocabulary. Sometimes there is just no better alternative. Now if someone can't string more than three words together without using some form of the F word then there's a problem.

When you say "you" are you referring to English speaking people or just people who have ever said the "F" word? Either way it's a cuss word or "bad word" and I'm sure everyone regardless of the language they speak has said a cuss word, even those with a "big" vocabulary. Oh and by the way, if you look the f word up in the dictionary, you'll find it. It's a valid word recognized by the writers of dictionaries, or is your brain just that small that you didn't know that?

Which "F" word are we talking about here? The one followed by "a" or the one followed by "u?" I'll state clearly right now that I absolutely do not condone the first use unless it's for satire/reformation of society (considering I'm a hard-left liberal and a member of the LGBTQ). If we're talking about the four-letter "F" word, then why shouldn't it be used? It is merely a general term (doesn't target any minority groups and can be said to anyone) of expression meant to alleviate anger and frustration just as the "ouch" or "owww" sounds are made when one is physically hurt. Just because I swear doesn't mean that my lexicon is any smaller in comparison to yours nor does it mean that I am any less intelligent. At least I know how to scan a question to make sure it is grammatically correct before I submit it... *cough**cough*...

Seriously, who cares as long as the profanity used isn't directed at a certain group and isn't racist or bigoted? Now, I'll agree with you that swearing all the time sounds pretty stupid since the purpose of swearing is to emphasize a point, which is something that won't happen if people use profanity just as they use "like" or "you know."

The use of profanity has no correlation to a person's understanding of a language's vocabulary. Profanity is often used to draw attention to a sentence or add emphasis by making the sentence shocking (rude). There is nothing wrong with using profanity (as it is indeed part of our language), though over use can be considered indecent by many.

The word is related to the Dutch word "fokken" meaning to breed. In English, the original meaning is "to copulate" or "to engage in sexual intercourse." As with many words, however, slang definitions have developed around it as well; this is probably what you are referring to.

The word is most likely considered to be obscene or rude because of the moral stance English speaking societies have taken towards sex and sexual behaviors in trying to pin them as shameful or sinful. And while that is an answer for another day, the reality is that languages are developed and transformed by the views of those people who speak it.

This word is no better or worse than any other; the acceptable usage really depends on social acceptance of the word. It has absolutely no correlation to vocabulary size or intelligence, but is merely a way of expressing emphasis in an (albeit) overused fashion.

It is a word for emphasis, which tells the listener "Hey look, the next word after this one is really important in this sentence."
f**king
freaking
wicked (New England)
bloody (UK)
like (California)
pinche (mexico)
......words like this, in their proper context, have that function.
