I did not find the name of this disciple in the Bible.

John 13:23 states: “Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.”

It was not Simon Peter because the next verse, John 13:24, states: “Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.”

John 13:25: “He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?”

John 13:26: “Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.” So Judas Iscariot was not the disciple who Jesus loved either.

The name of this disciple is still not stated in John 19:26-27, to wit: “When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his moth, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”

Why were the mother of Jesus and the disciple who Jesus loved, at the foot of the cross? Isn’t it that usually, close relatives of the deceased are near the coffin and others are watching as a distance? So this disciple standing by Mary must be a close relative, must he be not? Who are the close relatives of Jesus? Of course, Mary, His mother. Jesus is the only child of Mary. John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus. He was the son of Zechariah and Elisabeth who were already old then when he was born. So it is assumed that after more than 30 years (age of John), they must be dead already. Joseph, the husband of Mary, was also old when Mary was espoused to him. So it is also assumed that he must also be dead already at this time.

What is your opinion about who the disciple is? If it is John, which among the Johns of the Bible? Why do you think his name is John?

To The_Cricket – You are right. In the Holy Bible, the apostle John is referred to as son of Zebedee or brother of James or both.

To ? – Is he the apostle John? Seems that there are several Johns. There is John the Baptist, John surnamed Mark, Simon Peter is the son of John. Jesus may have many disciples but only 12 apostles.

To childofgod – Is John one of the mentioned brothers of Jesus in Mark 6:3 and Matthew 13:55 (James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon)? It does not. Jesus even said in Matthew 13:57: “A prophet is respected everywhere except in his home town and by his own family.”

To Utuk – So you think it was the apostle John, the son of Zebedeee?

To magpieix – I am not being dishonest to you. I am trying to guide you in analyzing the facts to determine who this beloved disciple could be.

In John 19:25, the women near Jesus’ cross were His mother Mary, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Except for His mother, the other women were watching from a distance initially. But when Jesus was near His death, they must have moved to near the cross of Jesus. Could the Roman soldiers have allowed these followers of Jesus to be near Him since He was about to die?

You therefore say that it was Lazarus to be the beloved disciple. Don’t you think that it was dangerous for Lazarus to be at the crucifixion site because he was being hunted down by the chief priests (John 12:10-11).

To allen t – Which John are you referring to? The apostle John, or John surnamed Mark, or John the Baptist, or John the father of Simon Peter?

To k1ngfischer – Don’t you think that the disciple who Jesus loved is a man? John 19:27 states: “Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.” The disciple must be a man because it says “his own home.”

I notice you start your quotation at John 19:26, which is completely dishonest given your claim that Mary, Mother of Jesus was at the foot of the cross and Mary Magdalene was "at a distance".

John 19:25 says explicitly: "Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene." which by your own logic means that Mary Magdalene must have been a close relative, right?

btw, John's account of the crucifixion is not supported by known history, and the Romans didn't allow anyone--close relative or not--to approach execution sites. John is the only Gospel that claims this occurred--the other three concur with the historical practice of restricting access to crucifixions.

Back to your question, I've seen it convincingly argued that the beloved disciple (and in fact the "John" of the "Gospel of John" was in fact Lazurus.)

The general concensus is that it is John, the son of Zebedee. That is the traditional opinion. And there were others at the cross that were not close relatives - I don't think that is a reliable criterion for identifying the beloved disciple.
