This happened recently with that bride who got cold feet.
She bolted without telling anyone... then told her parents she was abducted... this caused a massive search for the woman and the alleged abductor.

When the woman was finally found, she fessed up that she just got cold feet and bolted from the wedding.

I don't know whether or not she was ever charged with a crime. I know everyone at first was just relieved to find her alive. She may have been required to get counselling.

Personally, I think she owed a huge apology to her community as well as several hours of community service. I kept up with that story, and remember reading how various restaurants donated free meals to search parties in the community.

If it isn't illegal, it certainly should be.

Yes, and in fact the consequences are very severe. A while back a runaway bride pretended to be kidnapped. She served time in jail and she had to pay back all the money the government spent trying to find her.

How can someone know you were "kidnapped" if you don't report it? If you do, then you are falsely reporting a crime which is a crime. A lot of municipalities now will charge you for the cost of looking for you when you knowingly disappear like that.

Yes it's illegal and other law agencies can sometimes be brought into these types of cases, FBI, so you will waste a lot of manpower on a prank. I would not advise pulling this chain.
