You can always spot a phony-fundie story when the atheist come Xtian is portrayed as grumpy, hostile, joyless, etc...

As an atheist myself, i'd have to say that, proportionally, i have met more Xtians that had bad attitudes than i have atheists.

For expertless:

Christ Christ christ CHrist cHrist CHRist.

I have no problem with it, it's just easier, and faster to type X.

Yes... they are easy to spot. But you've got to understand the mentality... it is ALWAYS been a key principle of Christianity that it is OK... not a 'sin'... to lie in the furtherance of the "Lord's work."

As someone who was once completely hostile to EVERY religion, and who has known/currently knows many others (including my husband) who were/are STILL hostile to every religion...I'd say that it's true most of the time, even if not all of the time.

But no, it's not always the same caricature. Sometimes the atheist who becomes a Christian (or another religion) was never a bad person, and was fairly content in their old life. They just found something else even better.

And it cracks me up seeing atheists use the "not a true Scotsman" fallacy.

I hear a lot of stories of atheists supposedly becoming Christians after having a "near-death experience." Even if the stories are true, what is it about the experience that would lead a skeptic to believe they were experiencing some aspect of the Christian god? Maybe it was Zeus, Odin, Ganesha, or Thoth-Amon that was trying to get through to them.

You see it all the time. "I was taking drugs and drinking all the time, having sex with everyone I met, living in a rat-infested apartment, and I tried to kill myself 15 times...and then I found God." (Bla bla bla.) You're right, it's phony and easily spotted...at least by atheists. Unfortunately, there are many, many believers that buy it hook, line, and sinker. That's love to tell each other nonsense about atheists, so they really aren't interested in whether or not there's any truth to stories like that.

It has a great deal to do with the same sort of mindset that the writers of the Gospels had. It's perfectly all right to fabricate stories as long as it leads people to believe in Jesus.

Lies, in that situation, are not lies, but merely persuasive illustrations or parables.

True. Of course, there are some grumpy atheists who get annoyed by the fundies raking in all that cash from the suckers - then think, "Hey, I could do that...."

Those who say that they used to be atheists turned christians... weren't really atheists... just were dysfunctional christians.

You don't even have the nerve to say or type the name of Christ. God will soften your heart someday.
