Congatulations you have just done something that I never have! There should be nothing wrong with the water because the hydrant should be tied right into the same water as that the resident's get at their homes. You probably just got too hot and then drank too much. Then when your belly started cramping your imagination started playing games with you.

Fire hydrant water is the same water that is pumped in your pipes for drinking, but this water is not circulated as much. Since the water does not get flush through the pipes as often as other water, it may become stale or accumulate sediment from the pipes.
Overall, you should be OK, but probably ended up with some stale water. Take something like Pepto Bismol to calm your stomach and if it gets worse, see a doctor.

Unless the hydrant was painted purple, (wastewater effluent), you are fine because the majority of hydrants use potable water, the same thing which comes from your tap.

Yes it is the same. If you think the outside pipes are corroded...you need to also think about the pipes and faucets inside your house. And when new faucets and pipes are put in...they are put in with some pretty nasty stuff. You can also request a report on your drinking water and what is reported in it. The further you live from the source of the water the more polluted it is. They laugh about bottled water and where it actually comes from but at least the ice cubes made from it are clear. I live about as far south as you can get in the US and the drinking water is terrible and comes with warnings about who shouldn't drink it.

most cities and towns tap on city water for fire hydrant so when pipes get flushed they open the fire hydant if the water was clear most likely what you are feeling is cramp from the cold water
