What is good? Linux is a reasonable replacement for windows for many users that offers an open source alternative for most of the functionality a windows system can provide.

There are many different releases of Linux such as fedora, slackware, knoppix, ubuntu, kubuntu, debian and so on. Do a search on any of those and you will find tons of information on how to download and install. Some even offer a live CD which you can download and boot off the CD to try it out, like knoppix or ubuntu, or just use it that way without altering your existing configuration.

As far as whether it is easy, well, I wouldn't recommend it if you do not have a fair understanding of computers, disk partitioning, and operating systems in general, unless you are planning to just use a live CD. If you don't know what you are doing, and don't want to do the research or reading to learn, you can quickly get in over your head, and you will not have a very positive experience.

While linux systems are getting much easier to install and use, the paradigm is different enough to cause some grief, especially if you are trying to build a dual boot system with windows and linux, but even with file system layout and partitioning in general, you can get lost if you are not familiar with it.

EDIT:

From your update, I would highly recommend using a live CD like ubuntu or knoppix. That way, you can load it on any computer without altering the configuration

One of the most user friendly varieties of Linux is Ubuntu. One of the problems you can run into is driver support - especially for usb wirelss devices. However, you can download the 'live' CD version which lets you try out the operating system and not actually installing it.

Download Ubuntu for free here:

go here and install this program:

http://wubi-installer.org/
you can try it without risk, if you don't like it you can load up windows, go to add/remove programs and get rid of it. it's the easiest way to give ubuntu linux a try. even better than a stupid live cd. live cd's are slow, and they don't detect half your hardware;

its easy if you know what you are doing, My suggestion , read as much as possible about Linux. Linuix has many distros, so you have to check link below and choose for yourself.

it required extensive reading, if you're ready its good :), try and judge for yourself
