it started out as 2x4 but the final finishing on it took a quarter inch off each face to straighten it and smooth it.

Funny as it sounds, that depends....if it is cut green, it is a little larger than its target size of 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches...roughly a 1/16 of an inch oversized....When dry, they should all be a uniform 1.5 x 3.5, wheather cut green or cut dry at first....Just remember, that wood changes in size with the amount of water in it, and that changes with the amount of water in the air all the time.
