Well, I don't think you gain weight persay, but it's definitely not a good idea.
You see, people who eat late at night tend to go to sleep soon after. This results in food sitting in one's stomachs for the rest of the night, thus storing the food away as fat since one's body is not burning many calories.

People generally do believe you gain weight - because of certain reasons.
Because they believe you need time for your food to be digested, to be used up. After 9, or 8, your body wouldn't have enough time to digest the food properly. And then they get digested in the night while you sleep, might cause you to increase your weight...
I don't really get how it works but that's what I heard.
Hope this helps >.<

there is nothing wrong with eating at night if the calories are with in your daily limits and you choose smart foods to consume. meals consumed late at night should be mainly proteins and vegetables and health fats. when at rest the primary energy source utilized by skeletal muscle are free fatty acids while organs like the brain and others only need minimal amounts of glucose to function properly.
body mass and body composition along with genetic factors determine the difference between the resting and sleeping metabolic rate. the less body fat a person has the less of a decrease there will be between the RMR and SMR. also the metabolic rate increases during the first sleep cycle and steadily decreases to it's lowest point right before awakening

i eat all night long, but then again, i work 3rd shift and sleep all day.. it is true that you tend to gain weight if you eat a lot of food shortly before bedtime.. this is because you are taking in a bunch of calories, then going to sleep shortly after and not using any of the calories you just ate, your body has no choice but to store the extras as fat.. if you are going to eat shortly before bed, i recommend making that meal a low carb meal, higher in protein and fiber.. this will be a slow digesting meal, with few carbs to be stored by the body, while still providing you the satifaction of a full belly. try to eat most of your carbs for the day in the first half of your day for weigt management.

No, it's not bad to eat that late, as long as you don't go to bed directly after. If you sleep right after you eat, it causes your metabolism to slow down and it will eventually lead to a weight gain. If you stay up after you eat, you're fine.

They used to say that. Now it's conflicting. It really depends on your lifestyle in a whole. If you keep in shape it will not matter when you eat.

I always have something to eat late at night shortly before I go to sleep and I'm thin. But I guess everyone's different and it also depends on just exactly what you eat before you go to bed.

i don't think it's too bad if you don't go to sleep like very soon after, just make sure you stop eating at least like 3 hours before bed.
And also if you do snack at night, snack smart, instead of getting ice cream, chocolate, or anything else like that, get something healthy and low in fat and calories.
:D

It's generally accepted that eating late is not very healthy because your body does not have time to work off the calories. You may also suffer heartburn and not sleep well due to indigestion.
