Absolutely, I've seen it several times.

It depends on the species, for example perch and whitefish have such soft mouths that if you bring a bigger one up too fast, you could rip the jaw off. Also, I ripped the jaw off of a small rainbow once, probably because I was out for salmon and had heavy gear, I cranked it in really fast and all I got was a jaw.

No stretch line would definately cause this easier that monofilament.

Moral of the story: "Don't horse him!!!" I'm sure you;ve heard people say that before.

I have never heard of the jaw being ripped off a fish from setting the hook to hard but, I have heard, seen and experienced ripping their mouth open (crappie mainly) I would not suggest trying to injure the fish just to see if it can be done.

I doubt it but i guess it would depend on the fish and the strength of its connection of jaw bone to skull. In fact since the bottom jaw is the one that is detached, and the hook sets in the top, that's part of the skull so the only possibility is that you rip a chunk of his skull out. VERY unlikely, and probably not possible unless the fish had a serious bone problem, in which case it's was probably already dead if not about to die soon.

NO you cant rip the jaw off any of the fish but you could rip their lips off!
The jaw is very tough but the lips on some fish are very soft or thin and can be ripped or torn!

HEAVY lb test line, rod with a lot of "backbone", ya' know like in a 2" x 4", along with a smallllllllllllllllllllllllll fish, it may be conceivable ~ but I really sort of doubt it...

I guess it could happen, but more likely would be that you would rip your hook right out of the fish's jaw (like ripping an earring out of someone's ear). Their jaws are made of very flimsy material!

It is possible, especially on crappie, I've actually ripped the lips off on accident.

Not on a big fish. It could happen on a really small fish, but on a 40 pound striped bass, it's not going to happen.

Set it as hard as you can. If you feel like it, set it again.
