Right now, Windows XP is best. You see, right now, more hardware and software works with it. For the current 32 bit based systems, and today's hybrid 64 bit systems, XP is best.
But tomorrow's computers will be a true 64 bit architecture, with real dual processor technology with faster advanced 64 bit RAM. The 4GB RAM barrier will be broken, and 20 terebyte hard drives will become available. These systems will need a good native 64 bit operating system with some awesome "WOW". That will be Windows Vista Ultimate 64 flavored. Every day life will be like looking at a sci-fi movie, like "Minority Report"
It's just too early to step into this bright future.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Vista has been on the market for less than a year and it usually takes vendors about 1 or 2 years to catch up.
Vista is clearly the better product since it is an enhancement to XP in general, but I usually stay 1 release behind until the operating system has been out for about 2 years. I've done it with NT, 2000 and now XP so it make my life easier. Of course, I might have to upgrade or purchase a new computer when I do.
Make sure you stay on the latest service packs and also subscribe to http://update.microsoft.com to download all of the fixes. I keep my computer up to date on the latest patches that come out.
Hope this helps,

Depends on the system - to run Vista requires a top of the line PC. Even those units shipping today are just barely able to handle the program.
As no one is shipping Vista only items yet (and if history is any indicator, will not for at least another 1 1/2 to 2 years), there is no major advantage to going to Vista yet.
I would recommend waiting about a year - until they release the first Vista Service Pack before switching to it. By that time MS will not only have addressed the issues with Vista, but the PCs on the market will be better able to run it.
Or if Vista turns out to be a "dude", it will have disappeared by then.

I'd say stick with XP. It is older, but has a lot less issues. A lot of people jump on Vista for its shinny new interface, but it's not worth it. My brother just got vista and can't stand it. Vista still has a lot of kinks to be worked out. Here's an article over the subject:

Depends on your needs. If you are running older programs, XP is more compatible. If you are starting fresh, go with Vista because the support will last longer, and eventually you'll be forced to make the switch anyway. The bells and whistles of Vista are nice, but for most folks, not really that important.

Define Better.
XP has a smaller memory and disk footprint, runs faster on most computers (less overhead), has better device support (64 bit Vista can't use any unsigned device drivers), and has a less intrusive security interface.
Vista provides better security, a more visually oriented interface, has more built in features, but consumes much more memory and disk space and requires alot more powerful hardware on which to run many of its advanced features.
For XP, you can get along just fine with 512-768 MB of RAM, a 32MB Video card, and a 1GHz Processor. Vista you will want 2GB RAM, a 128MB Video Card (at least), and a dual 2.0GHz proc or single 3+ GHz proc.
Steven, Solaris is NOT Linux, it is UNIX. There is a difference.

Xp is over 6 years old and has many fixes and patches released by microsoft. There are also, lots of programs and games for xp.
On the other hand, vista is so new and has a lot of compatibitily issues.
If I were you, I would keep using xp.

XP is a more mature and stable product. Vista is still little better than a beta release at this point.
XP hands down.

It depends on your computer. Vista is a resource hog. If you your computer is very fast and has a very large harddrive, then Vista is awesome. Otherwise, stick with XP.
