What exactly is it about, and is it safe to say that forgiveness, considering Joseph took care of his brothers, is a theme?

The story of Joseph is about 1 man's integrity to Jehovah against all odds.
We do not read of him complaining, mocking or condemning God during his 13 years of unjust imprisonment.
You do not see him holding grudges against any member of his family.
But you do read how this humble servant of Jehovah was richly blessed and is remembered in the bible and serves as an example of righteousness for us all.

Forgiveness is an important theme, yes. The story of Joseph is simply that, the story of Joseph. I wouldn't try to make something out of it other than what it was. Joseph was the favorite son. Jacob spoiled him. His brothers despised him/ He was sold to slave traders by his brother. He was bought by one of Egypts Generals (Potifer). He was thrown in prison by Pharoah for being wrongfully accused of raping Potifers wife. He was released from Jail because he interpretted Pharoah's dreams. He was made 2nd in command of Egypt. He saved his family from famine. He then made a deal with Pharoah that made the Israelites slaves for Egypt. Forgiveness??? I say more of revenge. While Joseph was on the throne as Govenor of Egypt his family was in slavery to the Egyptians.

One of the themes of the story of Joseph is expressed in this verse.

Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Even though it looked like Joseph was getting a raw deal He waited on the Lord and good came about despite what people tried to do to him. Sometimes we have to go through trials before the word of the Lord spoken over our lives comes to pass.

Psalms 105:17 He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: 18 Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: 19 Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him. 20 The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. 21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: 22 To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom.

Forgiveness is a part of Joseph's Christ like character and in many ways his story foreshadows the story of Jesus who will return as a conquering King!

I could give you a synopsis of the story and my opinion of it, but the best thing to do is to end your depence upon man and read it for yourself. You will find it in the latter part of the book of Genesis, but I won't say where since it is a bad idea to cherry pick a story out of its larger context - this only encourages error.

Read, my friend, and think - it's the best thing you can ever do. You should also be aware that men gave their very lives in order to get us a translation in English so that we would be free of error and oppression - shouldn't you consider it the greatest privilege of your life to read it and so honor their sacrifice?

Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, and eventually went to Egypt, and worked under Pharroh, and worked his way high into Pharroh's ranks, and instead of getting revenge on his brothers, which he very well could have because of what they did to him, he forgave them and showed them love by helping them in their time of need.

It's a very good example of turning the other cheek.

A foreshadowing of the advent of Christ's earthly father. St Joseph is said to have many prophetic dreams.

Joseph's story is about God's redemptive plan. God has foreseen the famine that will come in the land of Canaan where Jacob and his sons live. He caused Joseph to be there on Egypt, became an overseer to the Pharaoh, trusted by the Pharaoh of Egypt.

At the time famine was in the land, Egypt has stored some stocks. Jacob told his sons to buy corn from Egypt. At that time, they were reunited, and forgave each other. But that's not the whole point of the story, The point is that Joseph became a ruler of Egypt at that time, next to Pharaoh, and saved his people from famine. He made his people live in Egypt to save them from famine.. God's masterplan..

Gen 45:4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.
Gen 45:5 And now be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.
Gen 45:6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and there are yet five years, in the which there shall be neither plowing nor harvest.
Gen 45:7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a remnant in the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.
Gen 45:8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

Gen 45:17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan;
Gen 45:18 and take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.
Gen 45:19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.
Gen 45:20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.

Pharaoh gave them a Land in Egypt at that time, because of the deeds of Joseph, He had been a good overseer to the Pharaoh.

Definitely forgiveness! :) I also think of it as a lesson in humility, because when he first started having the visions he was kind of haughty about it.
