You might think you and your mind are one in the same but I don't considering I'm constantly telling by mind to shutup so I can sleep or concentrate on something, there is the me telling my tool to shutup because its thoughts aren't needed at this time. I'm sure most of us does this from time to time.

I've never heard it brought up in the medical field but the rambling mind is probably the cause of a lot of insomniacs.

Schizophrenics often have active creative minds, but not everyone with an active creative mind is schizophrenic. I consider myself fortunate that alone in my little cubical I can run to my computer and put all the stuff in writing to be used and edited at a later time. I rarely ever dream. If I wake at 1:30 am with ramblings in my head I encourage it until it reaches or breaches logic, depending on what it is. Then I get to the computer and maybe stop around 6 or 7 am. Unfortunately not everyone has the freedom to do that.

Actually that is brought up in the medical field as one of the causes of insomnia... speaking from personal experience. But I do both... There are times where my mind wanders and I have to purposely bring it back to task... then there are times where I have control over it completely and can follow through with the task at hand without distraction (thinking of other things I could be doing or merely thinking about things that are not relevant to what I need to be doing at the time). Sometimes it's a struggle... especially when it's 3am and I'm trying to get at least a couple of hours of sleep before I get up at 5am to go to work... Other times I can ease my mind with meditation, which allows me to work through those distractions and place them in a proper category within my mind to use only when needed instead of it popping up when my mind wants.

You're right, everyone does it from time to time... few rarely try to control it though. The distractions pull them away.

Both. You have some ability to control your day dreams and other rambling thoughts but it is not always successful. Part of meditation training uses a mantra which replaces involuntary thoughts with voluntary thoughts. Similarly, some people say the rosary or recite a short prayer over and over. I find my mind can start racing which prevents me from getting to sleep some nights.

The mind is the 'story teller', the entertainer. Without the mind's antics, we would be 'flat lined'. The comedy/drama keeps it all going!

When we ignore the urgings of the mind to get "us" involved, it fades into the background,

The mind feeds on the energy we feed it...e.g., a thought arises from 'the past' (childhood), instead of ignoring it, there is a tendency to dig around...feed another thought in...and so it goes.

Life can be lived, as before, but with less of the negative side of thought. Negative thought arises out of nothingness (looking for a new drama) and it is ignored.

We have a choice to not to attend to thought. Sort of "Thought Interrupted". :)

Yes,we have to control our own minds.Because
this is the devils playground. He is always putting
evil thoughts into our minds.Fear of the law of the land keeps the unregenerate man at bay most of the time.Fear of getting caught.
The Christian man brings these evil thoughts
under control by the power of the Holy Spirit
that indwells him at his new birth.

Its very true, while in bed trying to get to sleep my mind goes crazy with a lot of thoughts which tend to keep me awake, yet in the day when I need to think about something I get a mind blank. To answer your question it is a bit of both. Sometimes we can control our thoughts, but other times (like lets say a disturbing picture you try and forget) while blocking it out it just creeps back into your head... dunno why though

I consider the mind to be the alchemy of our thoughts and feelings, which occur simultaneously. We are the product of the electromagnetic energy that is produced with every thought and every feeling we experience. Our energies are sensitive to those that surround us and to the experiences we have. Something happens, we think and feel instantly, the electromagnetic energy that occurs from the impulses happening in the brain surround us, become part of us and make us who we are.

Our mind is who we are. It controls without control. It just is.

You have hit my problem that I have been experiencing lately. I think it's because we feel inadequate to handle all the things we are concerned about. Maybe the answer is to write them down and work a little at a time on them. I don't know, but it sure is annoying and impossible to sleep.

I was a ramblin' man most of my younger life. I still like to think of it now and again. It does not often get in my way. There are some folks as cannot conceive of a ramblin' man and want to hear tales of the sea and of far places. I can turn it off when I need to, however.

Here's my take on it.
We live in a prison and the guards are our emotions. They dictate our actions. We try to gain pleasure and avoid pain and the guards control this.
The warden of the prison is outside stimuli. All the information we receive from our senses order up the emotions that control us.
The only temporary retreat from our prison is entertainment, music, reading etc.
The ultimate escape from our prison is death. No more warden...no more guards.
