In short, do you think that scattered atheists like us have leverage over the superstitious mass? Or do you think that we´re just barking in the wind on our own?

Believers please abstain, I don´t want to get cluttered with your opinions on this one. Thank you

Most atheists including myself are reluctant to bond into active organisations based simply upon our lack of belief. Possibly because most of us are already involved in things that we do believe in, and possibly because a union of atheists sounds a little too much like another religion.

People who state their view when asked and do not pretend to believe simply in order to 'fit in' are to be admired however. It is they who are making the most progress.

We are not nearly active enough. We need a new Enlightenment, reminiscent of the European one in the 1700s. We also need more Robert Ingersolls and Thomas Paines...where are they?
If we can encourage religious people to turn away from fundamentalist ideology, the world would be a safer place for everybody.

Judging from the sales of books by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchins, it shows me that there are many silent non-believers out there. Our numbers are growing. I have no intention of converting anyone on here, but I would hope that if enough of us continue to be honest and be forthright with good information, it might start people to think on their own. That's the best we can do.

Not unless atheists have the magical power to raise the IQ of believers by 25 or 30 points, so that they become capable of rationality and critical-thinking.

No leverage yet. We are just starting to come out of the wood work. They have hundreds of thousands of years on us. And we don't condone brainwashing. And we don't have the privilege of leaving our books in motel rooms....lol
All we can do is raise our children to be open minded educated free thinkers with lots of common sense and wait on the world to catch up.

I don't really think so, religion is so strong for some people, and since most atheists don't have organizations and meetings and stuff, I think it would be hard for us to overthrow religion. I'm not really trying to get everyone to be atheist anyway (that would be cool) but I just want them to not impose their religion on me or the laws and everything would be fine.

LOL Good point but what about polytheists ? Are they less atheistic. Can anyone be 0% atheist ? Is not hearing or knowing about a deity the same as disbelief ? Due my disbelief in Quetzalcoatl, I do not throw mice in the air for him.

Yes. I know of at least one person on here that is christian but is beginning to understand the non-believer point of view.
And atheists aren't alone in this agnostics like me help alot.

You lack cohesion, thus atheists will be more like a "third-party"candidate; easy to dismiss with a message few adhere to.

(Now, I have no problems with atheists, until they get on their high horse and preach to me. I am respectful of your decisions; pelease return the favor).

Oh, my credentials? My wife is an atheist, so I can speak with some degree of credibility

Do you know that sailing up wind is by far more difficult than sailing down wind?
Many things in life are difficult but not impossible.
