I've been on penicillin for about 2 days and it didn't seem to help and I called the dentist emergency line and the dentist prescriped another type of antibiotic because the penicillin didn't seem to help but either way the pain is still hanging around. I get the tooth extracted in about 5 days.

FYI IT NORMALLY 2-3 DAYS AFTER AN EFFECTIVE ANTIBIOTIC IS GIVEN FOR IT TO BEGIN TO BE EFFECTIVE.
ALTHOUGH IT WILL NOT TAKE AWAY THE PAIN, IT DOES HELP TO DECREASE THE INFLAMMATION, WHICH DOES CAUSE PAIN. TAKE IBUPROFEN (ADVIL) WHICH ALSO BRINGS DOWN THE INFLAMMATION.
THIS TOOTH EITHER NEEDS ROOT CANAL OR EXTRACTION.

The pain probably wont go away until after the tooth is pulled. It will get better the longer you are on the antibiotic but it wont go entirely away until the source of the problem (i.e the abcessed) is gone.

antibiotics will not make the pain itself go away, only the infection. you should take aleve or something for pain....but check with your dentist first
