I'd say that a good many "believe" because they are afraid not to. That's pretty evident by the posts here.
They never try to convert by telling people all the "good" of their religion, simply that you will burn in hell if you don't believe.

They haven't been taught what the truth is that is found in the Bible.
Death is in front of everybody and because of not being told the truth from the Bible they have questions and concerns. Many religions teach you go to a fiery hell. This never came up in God's mind.
Condition of the dead = Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 shows the "dead are not conscious of anything at all." This being the case, there would be no way for humans to suffer, like false religion says.
A good dictionary, such as a Lexicon, will show you what the literal meaning of the word hell means. A deep pit. Hell is mankind's grave.
Torture is not the punishment from God, but death, or non-existence is. Genesis 3:19 and Romans 6:23.
There is hope for the dead , though, because of Jesus' ransom sacrifice. Matthew 20:28
Jehovah's Witnesses would be happy to answer any questions you have by means of a free-home bible study at your convenience.

You know - I was just thinking that. (Get out of my head! Ahh, what the hell, who am I kidding. Meerkats are cute.)
A lot of people dwell on "death" and what happens afterwards... What happened to enjoying life while you're alive to live it? God or no God, obsessing over the afterlife for the short time we're around to actually, y'know, -live- doesn't seem like it's a very frugal way to spend one's lifetime.

I don't know, but to be honest, I haven't really noticed that. Maybe it's because I'm a Christian myself...or maybe not. Maybe you just notice those questions more. I see a lot of questions from my fellow believers that have nothing whatsoever to do with death...and actually, I would say the majority of them have nothing to do with death.

you could be more specific. My best answer would be that Christianity is powered by the fact that death is a key ingredient. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again three days later. It relates to the physical death of a person and where the soul will go. If you died tonight would you go to heaven or hell? The purpose of a Christian is not to convert unbelievers, but to inform that there is a final destination for your soul. If we are doing our jobs right it should be information given then taking the person if willing to be converted. Christianity can not be forced it is your own choice. I recommend my beliefs, talk about them, pray for people, but ultimately it is individuals decision.

You do understand the Christian philosophy, don't you?
God sent His only son to suffer an excruciatingly painful death on the cross.
Before his excruciatingly painful death, he created something called hell where all of his followers could imagine those evil Jews, heretics, and non-believers sizzling away for eternity.
I'm curious about where the "loving kindness" enters into the equation.

Its a certainty; a point of no dispute from which you can consider the meaning of life. Of course if you believe in nothing but what you see, then death is a big black hole and presumably you want to avoid it.

Maybe because they don't have a true understanding of what happens after death and are afraid that what they believe might be wrong

Because your life will last for eternity, and only a small portion of that will be spent here on earth. You need to make a decision about where you want to spend the rest of it... heaven or hell.
