Hi, I'm buying this camera for my sisters birthday.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-400D-Digital-Camera-18-55mm/dp/B000IKVOE8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-5604650-8858203?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1187486863&sr=8-1

Could someone tell me if she'll need anything else like lenses to go with it or does that include everything she'll need? thanks

Hello,
If you're buying the kit, it will have everything you need with the exception of the memory card. You can purchase one of these at most stores for 20-100 dollars depending on size and speed. As for lenses, a nice one to have is the 75-300mm. It costs less than 300 dollars unless you get the one with image stabilization. That one will cost around 800 dollars. You can also get her a nice camera bag for less than 50 dollars. You might also want to pick her up a card reader for her to use with her computer if it doesn't have the slots built in. Something else that would be nice for her to have is some editing software. Photoshop elements 5 (for PC users) or photoshop elements 3 (for mac users) will cost about 100 bucks but she will be able to do some really great stuff to her photos. There are also tons of books out there about photography that might help her as well. Just go to the bookstore and look in the photo section as well as the digital photo section.

Good luck, Donna

Quite a bit high for a private sale or ebay, a little high for a shop sale, but if you've got a guarantee and its in good order then thats not too bad. An equivalent camera new (the EOS 1000D would be about £350-£400 new with same lens but without extra memory cards and case etc, but crucially, brand new with a brand new guarantee.

First let me say...what a very lucky sister you have.

This camera comes with the 'kit lens'. It's not the best lens in the world, but is perfectly good enough for anyone getting started. I wouldn't bother with another lens at this stage, as a better lens will cost more than the camera body. Although you could probably pick up an excellent prime lens for a very good price.

To get started, all she really needs at this stage is a Compact Flash card to go with it. The camera +CF card (on the page you linked) has this available as a bundle. The 2 GB Sandisk Extreme III is the perfect card to go with the 400D.

good luck...

The kit shown comes with the 18-55mm kit lens, which will get her started okay although she may want either a telephoto zoom and/or a 50mm 1.8 at some point down the road.

She will definitely need a compact flash card, though. A spare battery or two would also be a good investment.

The whole point about a DSLR camera is that you can use as many different lenses as you need.
Do you need different lenses?
You can add a more powerful and versatile Flash gun. Do you need it?
You can use filters on the lenses for special effects.
The list is endless !!!
You will need a CF card and a spare, and a spare battery.
Always carry a spare memory card and a spare battery with you.

A HAZE/UV filter or Skylight 1A or 1B filter or both.

A circular polarizing filter.

Check at cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com and get her one of their protective camera covers.

A comfortable wide neck strap which she should always keep around her neck to carry the camera and keep from dropping it. There are ones that say CANON on them.

make sure your not buying used or refurbished. extra batteries and a 2 compact flash cards would be good. get her a good bag and a uv filter cover to protect the lens front.
