In cooking, a casserole (from the French for 'stew pan') is a large, deep pot or dish used both in the oven and as a serving dish. In the mid-twentieth century, the word also came to be used for the food cooked and served in such a dish. These foods usually consist of vegetables and sometimes meat, pasta, or rice cooked slowly in sauce or other liquid, and may be served as a main course or a side dish. Casseroles tend to be thicker than stews and soups, thick enough to be served on a plate and eaten with a fork.

The culinary term en casserole (also from French) means 'served in the vessel used for cooking'.

Hot dish is a US Midwestern (and particularly Minnesotan) term for a casserole; it is one of the quintessential foods of that region.

One of the most popular casseroles in the United States (although almost unheard-of elsewhere)--especially at church potlucks and family gatherings--is green bean casserole, whose main ingredients are green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and french fried onions. In the United States, Hispanic foods such as tamales or enchiladas are sometimes made in a large pan and called a casserole.

Casseroles originate from the ancient practice of stewing meat slowly in earthenware containers. Early 18th century casserole recipes consisted of rice that was pounded, pressed, and used as a filling. Casseroles are cooked in Europe and the United States, and are found in other forms in many other cultures around the world.

Usually a casserole is a main dish. That being said, there are, for example, potato casseroles that are clearly side dishes. Go figure!

Well it depends on what you put in the Casserole dish. Generally I believe it is considered the main part of the meal. Like Tuna Noodle, or or Hamburger Helper. UGH are those dishes still around?

I would have to say that it depends on what is in the casserole! If it is just a vegetable casserole than it would be a side dish! However,if it has meat,noodles,cheese,vegetables,than it would be a main dish!

It's pretty much a one-dish meal, but it can also be used as a side dish. Casseroles are versatile that way.

They can be either. There are simple veggie casseroles that are intended as side dishes (scalloped potatoes for one) and rather magnificent combinations of pasta, meat and veggies intended as one-dish meals.

A casserole is actually a particular type of cooking dish and, technically, anything cooked in that type of dish is a "casserole"

It's whatever you want it to be. Something in large enough quantities is a "dinner" (with the exception of dining on "french fries" or whatever). Small enough relative to the meal is a side dish. Depends on how you want to feature it.

Depends-does it contain meat, cheese or eggs?-would be considered more of an entree. Mostly vegetables, grains or potatoes-side dish.
