If this wasn't the case then we wouldn't be at war right now

the people we put in charge, to protect us wouldn't be the same people that rip us off.

In moderation, they're virtues. As a test of their "badness", try taking their opposites.

Their opposites, when taken to the same extremes, are also bad:
Celibacy: This is just depriving yourself of one of the pleasures of life.
Anorexia: Do this, and you'll die eventually die.
Not using anything yourself: If you give everything away and never take for yourself, you'll die.
Workaholic: Causes stress and ruins families.
Apathy: This is just going through life not caring about anything. It is a waste of life.
Insecurity: You have to love yourself before you can love others.
Cowardness: If you avoid any conflict, you never resolve anything and you get walked over.

Of course, they are life motivators. These sins can change your life by just doing it or not doing it. Either of them can make a big difference. Of course, all of us have done some of these sins. Nobody's perfect. But by avoiding them and making them strengths, we will be surely motivated in making our lives better physically, psychologically and especially spiritually.

In many ways yes, that is why you need the love of Jesus to help you not give in to them and to forgive you when you do.
