Yes. And after awhile they just wont work the same, just like if you recharge a car air conditioner. Usually is cost effective to purchase new if in doubt.

No, absolutely not. The unit containing the refrigerant is sealed and there is no wear on the refrigerant whatever. It just changes state and it can do that till time ends. If the unit springs a leak, it needs to be repaired and charged but recharging is never necessary.

joe and dlm are right, unlike an automobile system, window a/c units are basically one piece systems. the most common problem is clogged (dirt) or damaged (crushed) fins. i wash ours out every year or so, unplugged and out of the window of course. you can purchase a tool called a fin comb to straighten out mashed cooling fins from an appliance parts or refrigeration supply store for a few dollars if you need it. good luck, hope this helped.

AC Shuld not eed to be charged , if your unit is needing charge thats mean you have a leak and that need to be repaired, other wise you will going to charge it again and again, If your unit is not cooling as good, try cleaning the coils and make sure the filter is clean
