WE are the retired parents and we moved into a motorhome and left the vicinity of our kids. They couldn't have lived near if they'd tried. Now that they have children, they wish I were closer, but they are probably doing a better job without our interference.
My in-laws lived in the same town while my kids were growing up. Good in lots of ways, and bad in others.

Yes, why not. When they are after the retiring age is the most important time that will be needing someone close for help.
I presume that after they bring you up it would be your turn to
take care of them. Both my parents are late but I live just five minutes away and as soon they need help I would be the most near one to go. I'm not sorry for that.
We live also close to my wife's parents who are both in their
80's and again no worry that we are close and ready for any help. If you don't take care of them , whom would you take care of then?

Its nice to have your family nearby. But it would be best the other way around. I'll find a place for my parents to live near. It will be good for the children, especially if work schedule are in conflict and they'll have fun time too. On the other hand, we could look out for our parents when they're close by, help with small errand etc.

Yes. I do. At first I was a little concerned that we would drive each other nuts, but it's actually been nice. I think the saving grace for all of us has been that we live in separate houses and live our own lives, but we are able to get together whenever we want (even at the drop of a hat). It's been a godsend for me too since I had a baby.

We did move near our parents after they were older.

I am thankful that we were able to do it. We lived with in 15 min. from my parents and with in 1 hr. form my husbands parents.

I think it was one of the best decisions we made. Both of my parents and my husbands mother are gone now. My husbands father is now 90 years old and lives with my husbands brother. We see him as often as we can.

I will forever be grateful for the closeness we were able to share with our parents.

Yes. depending on wether your parents are intrusive, it could be convenient that they are not to far away, because there will come a day because of age they will need your help / support etc. It is inevitable and must be considered for the future.

Would be great if we could manage it. At the moment, we live away from family and I think that grandparents are a gift to us and our kids. Of course, it helps if everyone gets along.
