I already have 2 dogs, but my friend is thinking about getting one for the first time. Problem is, she lives in an apartment, so the dog would have to be small-ish. Shes hoping it will be easy to train as well.
Any suggestions?

If she lives in an apartment, something in the toy category would be best. I have a Papillon and she has been wonderful at training. I also recommend Shih-tzus. She needs to make sure before she gets a dog that her apartment will allow her one however. If she can have one and she can afford the pet deposit, I recommend this website to help her pick a breed:

Get a full-grown, already housebroken dog from the city dog pound. She'll be giving a homeless dog a home and learning what it's like to live with a dog. Plus, she won't have to worry about how big it will get, as it will have already reached it's full stature.

Mutts usually make really affable friends.

Later, she can consider getting a puppy.

Let's see...shih tzu's are great...they can be trained fairly easily... miniature poodles are good to...no shedding from them either. Bichon's are good ones too. I myself live in an apartment, and I'm a groomer. Another good one is a Cavalier King Charles....easier to keep up on grooming than a mini poodle or a bichon... But those 4 would be my suggestions. Oh, and stay away from Lhasa Apso's...on the whole they can be agressive, and barkers. Pomeraians can be yappers too....

i like Pomeranian - they are great apartment dogs cause they don't need a lot of exercise, they do need daily brushing and a bath about once a week but that isn't a lot of work if you start them doing it when they are young they won't even give you a problem, they are sooooo smart and train easy if you take the time....you can also teach them to use a litter box easily

A Pug is a good apartment dog. Plus from what I've heard they don't mind being left alone .

What ever you do don't get a border collie even if it is small, I have two and they are wonderful but they need a lot of space to run! Good luck!

A golden retreiver or a lab are the best family dogs you can have...Iv'e owned both and the retreiver is the smartest and quickest learning dog...My black lab is still with us at a ripe age of 12 and still acts like a puppy.
