I personally love pit bulls. I don't blame you for being scared of them. The news constantly throws bad news reports about pit bulls at you, what else can you do but be scared of them. My parents tried to beat it into my head that certain dog breeds are inherently aggressive (ex: rottweilers, chows, akits, dobies, pit bulls...) But I wouldn't listen. I fell in love with my first pit bull while working at an animal shelter when I was in high school. I always thought they were beautiful, but when an abused pit bull came into the shelter, all broken and bleeding, he still had the energy to give me a kiss. They really are very forgiving and loving animals.
Pit bulls have a very LONG history. They originated when farmers and butchers needed a dog who is courageous and strong enough to take down a bull if needed. The farmers and butchers couldn't handle a bunch of bulls at once on their own, so they needed a strong agile dog to help them (this is there the name bulldog came from.) When people saw how strong these dogs were, and how well they combated with bulls, they started to abuse the dogs power, and started using them for bull baiting. A blood sport where they throw a dog and a bull in a ring, let them fight till death, and bet on who would win. But even though these dogs may have been bred to be strong willed, and even aggressive with bulls, they have ALWAYS been family pets, and human aggressive was intensionally bred out of them. They didn't want dogs who were aggressive toward humans. This is where many 'bully breeds' stem from.
Once bull baiting was illegal, some people started fighting these dogs with each other, again till death, again betting on the winner. And people who did this also didn't want to get bit if they ever had to interrupt a fight. So human aggression was still being bred out of them.
Now that dog fighting is illegal, some people still do this, but most pit bulls are kept as loving family companions. Because human aggression was bred out of them from the very beginning, a pit bull who is aggressive toward humans is actually very rare. But dog aggression is still quite common. Responsible breeders are trying to breed dog aggression out of them, and responsible owners will socialize their dog from a very young age. Through this a lot of pit bulls are dog friendly as well. But any responsible owner is aware of dog aggression, and is always on their toes. But human aggression has still never been a problem.
Some 'thugs' think that pit bulls look tough, so they will abuse, or train their dog to be aggressive toward humans. This is no easy feat, and aggressive pit bulls are usually neglected, anti-socialized, and even abused to bring any aggression out of them. Sometimes the dog doesn't get aggressive, they just break down. But anyways, a well raised pit bull who is in a loving home is very rarely ever human aggressive. YOu just have to know how to read certain dogs and their owners.
I'm not telling you that you should go out and love on every pit bull you see, I just want you to understand there history, and where they are coming from. If pit bulls were inherently aggressive toward humans, true pit bull lovers wouldn't own and stick up for the breed. We wouldn't be alive to stand up for them. I'm just asking you to keep an open mind, and please don't fight to ban them. An aggressive dog is created by it's owner. And you might meet a very sweet pit bull in the future who changes your mind about the breed.

Dog breeds originated to do certain things. Retrievers were bred to retrieve, and it would be difficult to try to train that instinct out of them. Likewise, I think pit bulls are more prone to aggression than many other dogs, but I don't think every pit bull is mean or aggressive. I have met very nice ones. Basically, the way they are trained and raised has more effect than the breed they are. Also, if you only want people who agree with you, why would you post this question. It defeats the purpose of Yahoo! Answers.

Dogs in general are scary if you don't know them. Being a pit has nothing to do with it. Most of the time these dogs are TRAINED to be aggressive. A lot of owners leave them as strays and then they learn how to be wild just like any other animal. Its all in how the owner raises a dog, pits included. Just stay away from all stray or unfamiliar animals and you should be fine.

I understand why you might be scared but unlike some people say pit bulls don't have it in their blood to kill or attack the ones who do are because they are trained to be that way I guess the reason why you might think this is because you probably have heard a lot of stories but believe me pit bulls are not the only ones that can attack any dog can if you train them that way so please don't discriminate the breed it's not every dogs fault for one dogs mistake

I have yet to meet an agressive pit bull. I worked for 12 years as a vet tech and 7 years as a pet sitter and have treated and cared for hundreds of pit bulls and NEVER met a mean or agressive one. Breeds that I did find to be nasty and sometime downright vicious where chihuahuas, springer spaniels, Chow chow and doxies. Have you ever actually been around pit bulls or are you just being brain washed by the media like most people??

i have never been afraid of any dog. i grew up with 14 dogs and 17 cats, took them all in as strays. why do people constantly put down pits? the news, other people? pits are far more loving and forgiving than most breeds. they do know their boundries but always try to push them. a responsible pit owner knows all this. why are you scared? their jaws hold about 1200 pds of pressure if i remember right, so use a hammer handle if attacked. pry open the mouth. my boy has no problem with me digging in his mouth for anything he is not suppose to have. i am still pissed that people think pits are bad animals. and yes that stupid *** football player, put the fear in once again. GROW UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!! were the killers not the dogs.

PLEASE STOP !!!!!!!! I am sorry you are scared of such a loving wonderful breed,I wish I could introduce you to the many rescue dogs we've come in contact with and let you see the love and appreciation in their faces when they know you are there to help.....we've picked up dogs that were left to die after a fight and they use all the strength left in their broken bodies to wag their tails and lick your face....how can you call this aggressive and scary?they are products of their environment and its up to us as humans to make sure this breed is shown to be the real, loving ,loyal dog it truly is....contact your local rescue and go meet some of these ambassadors for the American Pit Bull Terrier and then I pray you will have a change of heart!!!!!

I saw this 10 year old girl getting attacked by this pitbull. He was tearing her arm apart. The police officer had to shoot the pitbull 10 times, before he got her off of her. I am scared of them too. And they are very tough dogs who do not die easily and will fight to the death (even on people).

I love my friend's pit bull. She (the pit, not the friend) is fat and old and LOVES to have her butt scratched. SHe is very affectionate and protective of my friend.
No doubt I respect her pit-bull-ness and her breed's reputation. But I know her and she knows me. My friend keeps her securely locked behind the fence when she is not lazing around on the couch (she, being the dog, not the friend). :-)
Now, a strange pit bull wandering the street... oh yeah... that strikes fear in me.
