This question has turned out to have a lot more to it that I appreciated when I originally asked it.
However, I haven't changed my mind. I'm not persuaded that Jewish is a race. I found this: http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Who_is_a_Jew%3F
and read it. My conclusion is that Jewishness is entirely a religious trait and has nothing whatsoever to do with biology or genealogy.
There is no Jewish race and there never was.

Jewish is not a race, it's a religion.

Genetics... my grandfather was a Jew but he did not practice the Jewish religion. Just like Romany aka Gypsies is considered an ethnicity.
Dont you think when Hitlers goons came knocking if being a Jew was a matter of religion the people could of hide that fact?

Hi!
There are races of man and religions of man, these are two different things!
You can change your religion but you 'cannot' change your race!
Your 'race' is genetically made, you cannot change that!
So, in America, you can be christian, muslim etc by religion, but although you are classed as American, you are only classed as American by nationality, your 'race' is still the same, European, African, Indian etc etc
So, in Britain Jews or any other race, that lives here, can be British, by nationality, but are still of their 'original' race!
You can change 'what' you believe in, but not 'where' your genetic 'kind' came from!!
Its good, to think of only 'one' race .....
The 'human' race!!

There's 2 types of religion - "Ethnic" (Jews, Hindus, Tribal stuff) and "Universal" (Christian, some Islam, Buddhism, Taoism and others). Universal religions don't ask what race you come from they accept converts from anywhere. Ethnic religions make a big thing about race - ie their own.

No. You can choose to follow the jewish faith, but you can not become an actual blood Jew, that is ridiculous.

"Jew" can be used to mean someone who follows the Judaic religion *OR* someone who is a descendant of Judah.
