October is THE best time to visit China. Weather is glorious almost everywhere, including Beijing. Days will be gentle and a bit crisp; nights will be cool. Might need a light jacket in the evening, especially late in the month.

Be advised that the first week of October is a national holiday in China, so things like train stations and tourist sites will be a writhing, stinking mass of domestic travelers. Best to come here AFTER the first week of October.

In October you'll have the very best weather in Beijing. If you're going to be there on the national holiday (October 1st), you can observe pageantry in Tiananmen Square. Visit Fragment Mountain to see the Maple Trees. October is definitely the BEST time to go weather-wise. Here's a chart with the monthly averages:
