I was reading some Young Earth Creationist materials and came across several references to a water/ice canopy that sort of hovered above the planet. What kept this gigantic mass suspended in earth orbit, and what kept it together and from either drifting away or smashing into earth, and finally, what of meteors hitting it?

*shaking my head in amazement*
Could you post a link to this neat little reference... ? How is it I've managed to miss out on this kind of fun?
Edit: Thanks for the links! What a hoot!

They base that on the work of Isaac Newton Vail (1874) who maintained that the earth once had rings around it like Jupiter or Saturn and the collapse of these is what caused Noah's Flood. Vail also asserted the rings contained gold, limestone and various other minerals.
Vail himself believed the earth to have begun in a molten lava stage and that the earth was very old.
However, rings around earth have been disproved because of orbital conditions.

It was held up by a lot of hot air. But everything's OK now, after the Flood all that water simply drained away into the ground where it's trying it's darndest to create the impression that the fossil record was all laid down at the same time.

Some people believe a water canopy surround the earth and contributed to the Flood.
I am not of the opinion that was how the flood happened.
Decide for yourself... here's a website i found about it:

This is the first I've heard of it. As I understand biblical cosmology, the earth is flat, set on pillars, and covered by a solid dome called the firmament. Above the firmament are stores of snow and water. Maybe that's what they mean.
Whose for teaching this in school? We could call it "Intelligent" cosmology. ;)

Yeah, I would explain if I knew about it.
Maybe we're all bees in the tree of life.
Tree canopy and nectar... young trees do not produce as much nectar as mature trees. Therefore, logging the trees effects nectar production.

Sigh. I guess this is sort of good for a laugh. Maybe when I stop crying at the celebration of willful ignorance I will.
Is there anything they don't make up as they go along?

Sorry, I know I'm supposed to be on "break", but I recall asking about this very topic... hold on, I'll find my questions...
Ooooooh no, wait, I asked about another water-related phenomenon: the "first rainbow".

Apologies.
But I DID once overhear several old men bickering over this topic one night at a Denny's. A few insisted that it really exists, a few others said it was nonsense, etc.
