This summer we´re planning to go to Cairns to visit some family, like every year. We´ve always gone by plane, but we´re thinking in go there by car, stopping for sleep and in some attractives places like Brisbane. Do you recommend it?
If do, which other places should we stop at? How much time will it take?

It is a long trip to drive ... you don't mention if you have kids traveling with you..
What about by train?- You can stop off half way, stay the night and jump back on the next day or two.
They also have Suggested itineraries on their website.

If you want to drive to Cairns to Sydney only stopping in the night it will take you 3 days and you will be pretty much buggered by all that driving! If you take up to 1 week to drive there you will get to see some of the many attractions along the way.
Some points of interest are the Gold Coast with all its theme parks. The sunshine coast north of Brisbane & Airlie Beach in north QLD. Not forgetting the beautiful NSW coastline.
Mackay is a nice place to over-night if you want a half way point between Brisbane and Cairns. There really is so much to see in that trip. To see it fully would take months but if you allowed 1 week up and similar amount of time driving back down you will get to experience most things.

Hi there Yoo!!
I've driven from Sydney to Cairns twice in the last 10 years, and each time I stopped at some friends' places and at some motels.
The trip is 3,000km, and it can be a comfortable 5 day trip each way - doing around 600km each day. I do know of many people who've driven non-stop, but you're better off taking it easy and taking time out to explore cute places along the way.
I normally stop in Port Macquarie the first night with friends, then the next day drive to Brisbane - a total of 1,000km.
There are so many great little towns along the way. Pop into an NRMA office and ask for a motel/caravan park/accommodation directory [free if you're a member].
Each day at about 3pm I'd stop for a cup of tea or a cold drink and a break, and work out how many more kilometres I wanted to drive. Then I'd work out which town that would be, and I'd check the motel directory. I've stayed in caravans overnight, as well as cute little cabins. Take your own pillows and pillowcases with you, for a good night's sleep.
If you wanted to drive 1,000km per day, you could do the trip in 3 days - if you had another driver to help out.
I always like to wake up and have a leisurely breakfast before I got on the road, but some people like to take off at sunrise.
Don't forget - STOP - REVIVE - SURVIVE - take a break every 3 hours and get out of the car and walk around, it'll do you the world of good.
Whatever you decide, I'm sure it'll be a great adventure for you all!
Have a great time!

There are plenty of places to stay at along the way. I would suggest that you stay at places that you will find interesting. One good place is Airlie Beach outside Proserpine. You can stay at a motel there, and go to the various islands of the Great Barrier Reef. One thing to have is a Big4 Caravan Park pass, as it will save you heaps of money. You don't have to stay in a caravan, as most caravan parks will have cabins to stay in, and they are reasonably priced.
