Sure you can copy a legal document.. but you can't use it as an official copy..
You will have to figure out a way to keep track of it.. as you will not be able to copy the drivers license when you get it..
Good Luck..
P.S. Many police or other officials may find it a sign of immaturity not being able to keep track of that paperwork.. I wouldn't use that as an excuse when you talk with them.. it's also your only proof that it exists and that your legally driving a vehicle, if the computer network the official uses to verify your information, happens to be offline for one reason or another..

Okay, I'll bite. Why don't you have your original drivers license? Off the top of my head, I'd say it will not work. First and foremost, would be the issue of authenticity. It's easy enough to fake a drivers license as an original, let alone as a photocopy. Having said this, courts have upheld photocopies in the past as far as being admissible evidence in court. Now that more and more people are using photocopies for various reasons, including proof of identity, it could be arguable. The problem would be, though, that unless you have a lot of money, you will probably lose in court. Were I to pull you over for stop you, you would probably run, at the very least, the risk of multiple violations. Even if my background check shows the information to be correct, you would have to explain why you do not have a DMV issued permit. So this could easily result in driving without a permit. The next would be quite other laws would apply to this situation. If there has been a sudden rash of photocopied IDs, then you may face additional charges for passing these off. Let's face it, neither the police nor the lawmakers are the sharpest tools in the shed when it comes to passing laws and enforcing them. You may only get detained long enough for them to check the information can then be let go, but then again they may decide to detain you until you see a magistrate for determination. This could result in spending the night in jail and being released on bail. Since the majority of police are sadistic, my bet would be spending the night in jail. I would seriously consider getting a replacement copy no matter what the expense from the DMV. The way the laws are going, they may shoot you on sight for being a terrorist posing as an American.

You can make a copy of it, but it is not a good idea. If you are going to be responsible for the operation of a motor vehicle, you should be responsible to carry your license or permit with you!
It is doubtful that a police officer will accept a photocopy!

Don't get caught doing it, it is a government document and as such, may only be copied for specific reasons as outlined by law.

No, the original only, which you should carry on your person, not leave it a vehicle, just like you would your license. That is what your wallet or purse is for.
