Is one year jail time adequate punishment for ending two innocent lives while DWT'ing?

I don't think so. An example needs to be set here. And he knew he was wrong...he denied using his cell phone when first interviewed.

I think no one should txt or use their cell phone, while driving, they should only be driving, people can get killed because someone is using their cell phone, we were following this lady one day and she was using her cell phone and she was all over the road, she could of killed her self or someone else!
and also my friends little sister was killed when they were walking on the path, someone was txting and they drove right onto the foot path and she was killed....he only went to jail for a year!!
he should of been put in their and the key should of been destroyed!!!!! he took someones life away and he is still living out there, and he has not even come to say sorry, or say anything to them!
people need to think before deciding to txt while driving!!!!!
DO NOT TXT AND DRIVE!!!!

I don't even think people should be holding a cell phone while driving! I have a long commute each day, and I can accurately pick out the people who are on their cell phones before I draw even with their cars. I know these drivers THINK they are doing a great job of driving with one hand, but believe me, they aren't. Most people are not good enough drivers to drive with one hand and half a brain. Sure, it goes well enough as long as nothing happens, but...things happen. Unexpected things. And then these people don't have good enough reaction times. Not only that, they are paying attention to the phone call instead of the road so they usually are not in the flow of traffic, aware of what's going on around them. Believe it or not, getting a hands-free device makes a huge difference in the driver's ability to do two things at once--and those things don't cost very much these days.

And texting is far worse than talking on your cell. It should be wildly illegal with very large fines for the first time you're stopped for it, and much longer jail time if you're in an accident of any sort. Have we so lost touch of the rules of the road and the practical requirements of safe driving that we think we can be TYPING and do a good job of driving? If so, we must need mandatory drivers' education before you can get a license.

I drove over 18 wheelers for 8 yrs and saw a lot of accidents involving cell phone use. you would not believe the number of people using them. I think it should be illegal to use a cell phone and text while driving, and should carry the same penalty as wreckless endangerment or murder laws. If someone takes a life due to negligance they need to be held responsible for it NO 1 year is no way near enough

HE#L NO!!!!!!!!!!! What they The court system) needs to do is have Shaw serve at the VERY LEAST 2 - 10 year sentences served consecutively ( serve 10 years then when he is finished serving th first 10 year sentence - serve another 10 year sentence. THE MAN KILLED TWO INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO HAPPENED TO BE IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!
If he isn't in prison for that long of a period - then he needs to be on probation for at least 10 years - this way if he breaks a condition of his parole, then he can be arrested for probation violation!!!!!!!!!!
I have no sympathy for this idiot.

I think they are very stupid.

If it causes a death the person guilty of using the phone should go to prison for a long time. i am so tired of seeing people with talking with that thing crazy glued to their ear. What did we do when we only had phones at home. I guess we were not that important. And text messaging is worse, much worse.

If someone is texting while driving and caused someone's death as a result. I say chop their hands off, problem solved. No more texting for them!! Or driving for that matter.

If you're going to insist on text messaging all the damn time, pull your damn vehicle over to do it. I've had cars practically almost "merge" into me from the lane next to me because it was some dumb teenager screwing with their phone. Luckily, I was paying attention to driving, not my damn phone.

One year is not enough.

I hope the families of those two victims bring wrongful death lawsuits against him, so that when he gets out he will continue to pay for the rest of his life.

an example doesn't need to be made of one person. these people (our government) needs to pass legislation to stiffen the penalties on such offense. instead of wasting our tax dollars on stupid things like worrying about what events to attend based on how much free press it will get them.
