i'm renting an apartment and we can't repaint the white walls. i want to make my bedroom look modern and stylish, and i don't know if birch wood (like a light colored wood) or darker wood for furniture would look better...or are there other options? i need a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and a full length mirror for sure. but i'm on a $500 budget for the entire room. any help? thanks :)

Well, dark exspresso coffee colored wood gets my vote every time if we're talking about making a room modern and stylish!

You can find some great stuff within your budget... Check out IKEA... And don't forget to check out the corner they always have reserved for end-of-line products and slightly damaged goods. You can get some FANTASTIC FINDS!

Here are some pics with dark furniture with a modern look...

Here are some links of pale furniture to compare with:

I'd have given you more, but there is much less pale modern stuff out there than dark...

Notice one thing they both have in common: no clutter in modern furniture! That means keep it simple, don't clutter up your space with all sorts of stuff. Keep the lines simple and clean.

Enjoy your new space!

You can choose light or dark wood furniture....it all is available in contemporary style. You are going to have a difficult time fitting the room into a $500 budget so choose your imporant pieces wisely. Ikea is a good choice but they aren't going to get you an entire bedroom for $500. My suggestion is pick your bed and add the other pieces as you can afford. Make it a work in progress. You also don't have to "match" your furnishings and can find great pieces through consignment shops, etc. that can get you what you want without breaking the bank. Refinish old pieces with new fabric and/or restain or paint. Have fun mixing and matching.

I think black and white is very modern. White walls, black furniture and bright pops of your favorite color. Also, since you're on a budget you can get used furniture pieces and paint them all black. Painting them all the same color, whatever color you choose will give them all a cohesive appearence even if they don't really match.

white is neutral so you can choose anything., even black., another neutral. then you could go bright and colourful with your bedding,or pink and romantic . look for decorating websites to see what's hot and what's not. I'm not influenced by the "in" thing this year because next year it will be out. I like restful colours like aqua or sage green. choose what makes you feel comfortable. happy hunting!
