A few years ago my mom took in the cat I had fed for six months that lived in an abandoned car across the street. She had him neutered, got him his shots, and had him bathed. I could not take him in because my other cat would attack him and attack me if she even smelled him on me. A while ago I noticed he was licking himself excessively and I told mom he should go to the vet, she said no, I said I would pay for it, she said no, and she was mad at me. She went out of town a couple of days later and I took him to the vet anyway, he had his anal glands expressed and the licking stopped, I'm sure he was a happier cat. He's licking again, she's going out of town on monday and I will sneak him to the vets again. I don't feel bad to decieve my mom, I am glad to take care of this darling boy. My mom is old and grew up poor and folks back then didn't have money to spend on a pet. Please don't rag on my mom, the cat gets appropriate health care, I see to that. I know she's wrong.

His name is Oliver and he is four years old. He is all gray with a white dot on his chest. When my vet first saw him he said "He is beautiful!," and I've brought other cats in there and he's never said anything like that before. He is a very friendly, affectionate, happy boy. He is a skilled mouser. We have a love session every day, I am the one that feeds him and cleans his cat box even though I don't live there. He is srtictly an indoor cat, you can leave a door open all day and he will not walk through it.

Oh yes, one of the neigbor's cats had a caustic burn in his mouth and came to us in agony--couldn't eat or drink, was drooling, and in pain. We got him in immediately and ran up a vet bill of $200, let him recuperate in our basement and then let him go when he was eating again.

I don't know who owned him, he'd show up with a flea collar on yet be covered in fleas (those collars don't work) so I would take the collar off and dose him with Advantage. He'd show up in a week with another collar which I'd remove, and a third collar before whoever had him stopped putting collars on. He was out at all hours, so he wasn't an indoor cat for them. I considered them bad owners, if you saw the condition he was in anybody would agree.

We also had a broken tooth pulled on a stray who showed up with ropy drool and in pain. I got him into a carrier and the vet, who works with ferals, took the root of the tooth out and neutered him for us.

It depends on the situation. I used to take an older ladies dog into the vet. It wasn't really a good candidate for rehoming. It was an older, not particularly attractive dog with a bite history. It was definitely better for both for her to keep the dog.
In the case of an animal that's otherwise being cared for, I see no reason not to take them in for some vetting. It would be one thing if it was a particularly young animal that could find another home. It's hard to find an adult cat or dog a home. I'd much rather help the owner to keep the animal rather then have another homeless pet out there.

Yes, I know the feeling, I took the stable cat to the vet when he'd been fighting and got an abcess, I also see to it that he gets wormed and treated for fleas whenever I do mine too.

Sounds like really, he's your cat and not your mom's! :)
I don't see anything wrong with you sneaking the cat to the vet, especially if she won't do it and he needs to go.
I take my parents' cat to the vet sometimes when it's more convenient for me than one of them to go. Our whole family goes to the same office, so they know us well :)

good on you for looking after the cat.Don't feel bad about it , you'll feel a lot worse if the cat died because it didnt get treatment.
