I think it is more common to engrave the wedding rings.
Many people go with initials and/or the date of the wedding. You can also engrave a short message (for us it was the wedding date and "It had 2BU" because that is the song we chose for our first dance)

No. You don't have to engrave anything in an engagment ring. It would be nice but you don't have to. My boyfriend didn't engrave anything on my engagment ring.

its more traditional to get something meaningful engraved inside the wedding band but there aren't really any rules for things like this anymore

Alot of people do but you don't have to. My husband and I don't have anything engraved on our wedding rings.
