one of the great mysteries of the world
the crinkly sound?
the way the bags sometimes seem to move by themselves?
the fact they very well could suffocate themselves?
we as humans will never know

My cat hates plastic bags.
When he was a kitten he got his head stuck in the handle loop on a plastic bag and got stuck inside the bag, he panicked and started sprinting around the living room, which terrified everyone there cos we just saw this white rustling thing shooting around the room under the sofas, it took us 10 minutes to catch a hold of the poor guy, 10 of the most traumatic moments of his life and now every time a bag gets rustled he's gone quicker than an Afghan with a meal ticket.

Hi!

I read once that most plastic bags have some sort of coating that cats love the smell of! They also love the sound of the rustling bag, I reckon!

When I come back from the shop I sometimes cut the handles off a plastic bag so my cat can't get into trouble and then give it to him to play with. He loves it! In fact, here is the proof! http://s146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/emmie2409/?action=view¤t=P20-03-07_11.283.jpg

One of my cats saw a plastic bag for the first time. She was rolling it, and somehow got herself through the handles and freaked out! She ran up and down the hallway, meowing really loudly. The poor thing then wet herself!

It was extremely hard catching her!

So I guess it would be fair to say not ALL cats like plastic bags :P

Cats like playing with ANYTHING! Keep plastic bags well out their reach - they get in a muddle and choke themselves. One of my girls loves to find elastic bands, I make sure there are none around - don't think they would be good for her to eat! Do exactly the same as you would do with a child - keep bad stuff away.
Cats like playing with anything new to them. Remember that 99.9% of cats are extremely silly. That's not to say that they are not clever - any cat I have been allowed to live with has been very intelligent. They are still daft. Watch over them and try not to let them hurt themselves.
Having said all that, it's really funny to watch them play with new stuff, being all confused when something goes wrong. If they fall over and try to pretend that that was what they meant to do - they hate being laughed at! Play with the cat - it helps them to 'bond'.

Plastic bags are a NO NO! Many have warnings on them to keep away from children and pets. Paper bags are much safer, and you can also build a tepee out of newspapers that they will tunnel through, etc. There are crinkly bags sold in pet stores that are safe, but my cats never showed any interest, but readily went into paper bags.

They may like plastic bags just like they like paper bags but do not know the dangers.

My four cats have never played with plastic bags, but go crazy for paper ones, they love diving into them. They also love newspapers, generally curling up and sleeping on them , especially when I'm trying to read! Forgetting to shut the toilet door is lethal, toilet rolls are highly regarded as THE plaything by the cats in my household - its quite amazing just how much mess a shredded loo roll makes! x

My two love playing with plastic bags because they know that's where the tins of food comes from!

Playing with them? Ha! ha! My Siamese goes one stage further! After he's located the plastic bag of his desire, he'll sink his fangs into it and leave yukky salivary indentations all over. If it's a supermarket plastic carrier, he'll more than likely put his head through the handles and WEAR it!!!

... As for why he does this ... A fetish, maybe???
