Slaves and hired help, guess what they where men, men at that time new to cook about only on thing, (just like most men today) and that was roasting meat on an open flame (stick a stick in a fish and you have your meal) so I can easily guess that they had women both as cook and servants (Don't believe what Leonardo painted)
