Until you asked your question I don't think I'd ever thought in terms of "who"...thanks for giving me something new to ponder. I like the idea that the tree of life is (and was) Jesus...fits neatly in with other things Jesus said...and would also explain why man had to be cast out. Could also be simply a metaphor for him (for the concept of God in a human suit if you will).

The tree of life (eternal life) is Jesus Christ, we are able to be grafted in by faith in him,..doing this we become the branches that have been called to bear righteous fruit, ( This fruit is the works of his planted word that allows us to witness to others so they might become part of that eternal tree. The tree of life is in my thinking is,
You, yourself and what we taught becomes branches of our body.
We are watering our roots. Roots of life, the tree of knowledge, family tree, we give life to others as our blood flows through their veins we therefore are re rooting life in to other trees of life.

Tree of life, many roots, branches that grow with knowledge of truth and lies.
If you are not fruitful your branches will bare no fruit (no meaning children meaning more in way of faith, hope and Charity ;-)

The bible is very plain about what it is, a tree that has twelve manner of fruits and it will yield its fruit every month. Made by God with healing properties just as many plants are today.

Jesus is the tree of life. He has referred to us as the branches. As the branches He has left it to us to witness to others and live an upright life.
