My female dog was spayed Friday. I picked her up today and she seemed fine, happy to see us. After returning home I started thinking about pain meds for her. The dr. never gave me any. Is this normal? She had surgery. There should be some pain.

It is normal for the vet NOT to give your dog pain medications. My vet told me it is because the dog needs to take it easy for a while to recover from the surgery - if they gave her pain killers she might overdo it and injure herself further. Trust your vet and call them if you notice anything unusual.

Maybe. Depends on her attitude.

If she is acting fine and normal, then probably not.

If she is hunching over when she walks, has her tail down all the time, doesn't want to move much, doesn't want to eat, licks at her incision a lot, then she might be painful and could use some medication.

Don't let her be too active or jump up on things for at least a week while her incision heals.

If she doesn't have an e-collar and is licking at ther incision, she will need one. Bacteria from her mouth could make the incision infected, red and swollen.

If the vet didn't give you any then I would not worry about it. Although if it were me and I were a dog I would want pain meds. Anyway what kind of meds do you have to give if any? Did I just ask a question? Ou ou I just asked another one. Does that mean I'm gona get points taken away!

If she is acting normal I wouldn't worry about it. Dogs amaze me with how well they bounce back from surgery. If she seems stiff or acts like she is in pain, take her in to the office to have a follow up. If the vet rules out post op infection, he would most likely write your pup a 'script at your request.

Yes she should have been sent home with some. I work at a vet clinic, and we send all dogs home with four days worth of pain meds. So she is probably uncomfortable, dogs don't show it alot.

We didn't get pain meds for our female boxer. Just be easy with her - in about 7 days she will be back to normal.

The vet should have given you some pain killers. At least "just in case". If your pup is not in any apparent discomfort, just take it easy though :)))
No excitement or exercise for at least a week or so :)
All the best!!!

No, we have never gotten pain medication for dogs that have been spayed/neutered.. You want them to be quiet and stay settled so they can heal. If you medicate them up, they feel like they should be running and playing. Better to keep them quiet.

I have never been given any pain killers and most vets I know say it isn't necessary and they give when there and then they are usually fine.

OMG, they should have given you something to keep her at ease for a few days! And yes, that is considered major surgery.
