Hey A.V.. Very good observation. However, I think it's not so much trying to change someones mind that is the goal here. I believe that this site draws many people who are just angry by nature, or are going through an angry phase for some reason. This is a place where they can vent anonymously and avoid direct conflict. Let's face it. That angry talk face to face and the offender will spend ten minutes picking himself up off the floor. Here, there are no consequences for angry venting.

Insulting people for their beliefs shows immaturity and insecurity on the part of those hurling the insults. Resorting to that kind of behavior proves nothing positive. In fact, people who do this have a very bad superiority complex and, in all likelihood, are not very knowledgeable of their own beliefs/faith traditions.
We should not be adamant in changing peoples' beliefs. We must be about informing, educating, and enlightening others.

Some people think that a few insults without reasoned argument will turn people around -it will: to moving as far away from the insulter and all he represents.
Others are interested only in insulting or sneering maybe for ego reasons or just plain contrariness.

I agree with Pangel.
If you're trying to change people's beliefs, I think the last thing you should do is insult them.
I do think, however, it is important to let the person know what they are doing is wrong, which could be insulting in the end.

I can't imagine that they figure they are changing anyone. They are simply too ignorant or too rude to know how to answer without the insulting comments.
The philosophy professors call this argument ad hominim, which means that when you disagree with someone, instead of giving a reasoned argument you insult the person. It's a logical fallacy. That is, it proves absolutely nothing except the bad manners of the person who uses it.

Insults never produce a desired effect. "You can catch more flys with honey that you can with a baseball bat." Nothing good ever comes from insulting another. The person slinging the insult is sinning against himself. We are all accountable for every word, thought, action or non action.

Voice,
I generally do not treat people as "STUPID" or act as if they don't know anything. I generally try to give respect to each and every person. I do believe that most religious people who find they are doing things which are scriptural will change their ways. Have a wonderful evening.
Thanks,

No we can't. I know personally, that when I have asked an honest question and received insults, it really bother me. I think that after awhile, we all become calloused to other peoples feelings and beliefs.

Ha! Good question!
One I've been wondering myself. I never saw so much intolerant viciousness in my life as I have here on Yahoo! Answers. I think in "real life" people try to be more polite. Kind of scary to see the narrow-minded viciousness that creeps out when people "let down their hair" on the internet, eh?
