I'm not sure what you mean by a "nob." Do you mean "snob?"

See, when we mention a typo, it is generally to clarify that we have guessed right what you meant to say. Sometimes it is to tell you the correct spelling because it is insulting to have it wrong, as with spelling the name of a religion or of a holy person. Perhaps it makes one look like they are intelligent, but if it is unnecessary (as when what was intended is obvious), it makes one sound like Miss Grundy.

I don't think people who correct your errors are trying to look intelligent. I just think they are intelligent enough to know that it matters how you spell.
