Try the free VLC media player. In addition to .flv files, it can play a long list of popular multimedia file types. It brags that it can play any multimedia file type off the Internet. It is a bit of an exaggeration but very close (http://www.filehippo.com/download_vlc/). Here is a list of file types it supports (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html).

Media Player Classic
It is simplicity itself and looks virtually identical to the old Windows Media Player V 6.4 before Microsoft started over complicating things with V 7 onwards. A very competant media player actually.
