Ive noticed that there are hardly any short (knee lenght) wedding dresses are on offer - why do you think this is? - Do you think they are unacceptable?

I think a girl should be able to wear whatever she pleases on her big day, whether that be colours or a shorter dress, it just so happens to be the "done thing" to have a long dress, it's kind of tradition really, but there is nothing wrong with having a shorter dress if you so choose. Mine is ballerina length, it just suits me better, I think if the wedding is more informal then the shorter dress looks more in keeping with the style of the day.

Personally, I wouldn't wear it since white is traditionally reserved for the bride. That said, it's redeemable. Unless your boyfriend is 10+ years older than you, and assuming she's his age since they're childhood friends, she's not going to be terribly old fashioned and so probably won't even notice, let alone care. Throw on a brightly coloured, scarf, shawl or bolero, matching shoes and a hat, and some nice non bridal jewelery, and you're set. And let me emphasize; BRIGHTLY COLOURED! A white dress with, say, a pink bolero, cute shoes and a summer hat will look good, and the attention will be on the colour, not the dress. Bright tights is a good way to really draw away from the dress but obviously pretty casual. This doesn't guarantee you're not going to offend, but you should be safe. The easiest way to answer your question is to ask the bride directly. Tell her you would like to wear a short off white dress with brightly coloured accessories, and would she mind too terribly, or would she fell like you were stealing the bridal colour. If it bothers her, change it. If not, don't. If it will bother her and you don't have another dress you're happy with, consider dying the one you have; buy a pack of dark pink/blue/whatever colour dye for about £5 and dye the dress in the bath. One pack of dark dye will dye that dress a light-mid colour. Or spend the £12.99 on the same dress in a different colour. Have fun at the wedding :-)

Depends on the dress. Is it a tight little spaghetti strap number? I would say no. It's your wedding not a trip to the club, there is a time and a place for a super sexy look and walking down the aisle to take a sacred vow isn't neccesarily it. In fact, many churches require that the brides shoulders be covered in some manner, and many men have said they prefer the "princess" bride over the newer sexy one. They like to use their imagination about what naughty underoos you have on underneath I guess....probably back to that lady in the streets ho in the bedroom sort of thing?

At least make it fingertip length.....

If it is tastefully done I say go for it. Full length dresses are very much just a fashion trend...like the pickup skirts now or huge sleeves in the 80s. Look back to dresses from the 40s/50s and you will see they were usually short and most likely a suit already owned by the bride (WW2) and not an elaborate dress purchased just for the occasion.

My personal opinion is that the dress is the one item of a wedding that the bride should have total control. That being said I also think the bride should consider the type of wedding she is having before she picks her dress. A short wedding gown would look funny is she's having an extremely formal church wedding with a reception at a hotel. Also, I think a gown with a cathedral train on the beach is just ridiculous. I also agree with LoisLane, how many times in your life are you going to wear a fabulous gown? Also, a crinoline is the most feminine article of clothing I have ever worn.

I originally was going to wear a short dress, but I eventually fell in love with a long one, and so bought that one. I tried on several short dresses, and if any of them had fit me better, I'd have gone with one. We're having a traditional feel to our wedding, but are doing many of the details differently. I say if you want a short dress, then get one. There are lots of nice ones out there (look at cocktail dresses rather than bridal dresses). Best wishes.

as others have said- wear whatever you feel comfortable with - though an option would be to have your short gown but with a full overskirt that can be removed for the reception or a fitted underskirt that flares from the hem of the short dress - giving the impression of a long gown - the underskirt being able to be taken off for the reception also.
I have made both types of outfits with equal success .
of course it does depend on the style of your short dress as to what you would choose.

I think you should wear what you want but funnily enough the more formal the wedding, the more formal the gown should be. Have you thought of a long one but with splits - daring, sexy but still a hint of traditional? A flash of your great legs is far more alluring than the whole lot on show anyway.

Well, it's a matter of preference. What might look good on one woman might not look flattering on another. The length you described is acceptable just make sure it's flattering on your figure and very classy. This is a big day for you and you would want to remember it. Make sure the dress also reflects on your own personal style.

there are more now that there were at any time since the 50's - and I think they're great. Not everyone wants a big train & puffy dress & they're perfect for an informal wedding or a beach wedding or something avant-garde. So GO FOR IT & show of those gams!
