When I moved to the Midwest after living in California for a number of years and heard people ask me, "Oh, so you're from Cali?", I thought they meant the city in Colombia (the famous one associated with the drug cartel).

I'm from there and never heard anyone there say Cali either. I guess it's just shorter.

It's short for California and the term grew in popularity after the song my LL Cool J "Going back to Cali"

I've lived her all my life and only in the last year have I heard people use it, but mostly in an email name because the full name is too long.

bc its a shorter way, its better then sayin california. but i say either way all my life iv lived in cali nd iv called it either one .. it doesnt really mattter. like los angeles its LA .

I'm from SoCal (Southern California) and a lot of us here call it Cali as a nickname. Here, we call LA "The City", Sacramento "Sac Town", San Francisco "San Fran", San Diego "Daygo",
