Your question is actually a good one. Lots of teens (and adults too) enjoy eating raw cookie dough and do not understand the risk of contracting Salmonella. If the cookie dough that you are consuming has raw eggs in it, than there is some risk. If you are referring to a commercial product like ice cream that contains cookie dough, you can rest assured that the eggs that are used in that dough is made safe through a process known as pasteurization.
Salmonella is a germ that can be present in foods such as raw eggs, meat, or poultry. Heating foods kills bacteria, so it is very important to cook these items fully to reduce the risk of getting infected. The time between when you eat a potentially infected item and the onset of the first symptom may be from 6 hours to 10 days, but often happens between 6 and 48 hours. Salmonella causes gastroenteritis (stomach irritation), which can include symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, along with fever. Infants, the elderly, and people whose immune system is suppressed (such as those who are HIV+) are most at risk. Salmonella is one of the most common intestinal infections in the United States, with about 40,000 reported cases annually.

*It is important to remember to cook foods completely before enjoying them, and if you experience any symptoms that are unusual contact your doctor

It's ok to eat store bought cookie dough as the eggs used in processing have been pasteurized. Home made cookie dough could pose a risk of salmonella food poisoning due to the raw eggs. Salmonella is killed off during baking/cooking or pasteurizing. I have been eating homemade raw cookie dough for year without any ill effects.

The reason they say it is bad to eat raw cookie dough, or cake mix, etc. is because it has raw eggs in it. Most eggs do not have salmonella bacteria, but some do. They just don't want you to take the chance. However, for the most part, you'll be alright. It's that one time that you do though, that you'll be extremely extremely sorry. It can cause nausea, vomiting, etc. Some people have even died of salmonella poisoning.

Just be careful, and don't do it often if you just have to...

Hope this helps!

If it came from a package mix it should be all right. When I was a kid my Mom made cookies and used a raw egg that she did not know was bad. All of us kids get very very sick with food poisoning. I will never eat anything with raw eggs in it. Shortly after recovering from that, we got food poisoning again. This time from a watermelon. It had been kept in a stream to keep cool while at a picnic. Turns out there were cows drinking from upstream. The cow slobber got into the watermelon and once again it was sick city. We had the CDC come up and investigate what was going on in our house. Great childhood memories huh?

I've eaten home made cookie dough many times (without any ill effects), but have not had the guts to try the dough from the grocery store. I wouldn't eat the store bought raw because of the preservatives, but cooking probably doesn't change that at all.

In small amounts it is ok to eat some raw cookie dough....(home made) but the reason is because of raw eggs...if you use pasteurized eggs it would be ok...and as far as store bought, Pillsbury would be ok because it does not contain raw eggs...but an egg by-product

It depends on whether or not the cookie dough has raw eggs in it. If it does, you could get salmonella from eating the dough raw.

It's not 'bad' per say to eat a little bit of cookie dough (with or without raw eggs present) but the whole batch is kind of iffy. You can get sick from all the raw eggs, and possibly contract salmonella, even though it isn't very common anymore. You might also get a sick feeling from all the sweetness!
