Because of the harm that religion does to society. But it is not really pushing beliefs on people as much as it is getting them to use reason and logic. If we could get people to think more, religion would go away on its own.
It's about time that society rids itself of its old superstitions.

I'm not an atheist, however I would like to see more people realize that christianity is a false religion. I have no interest in converting anyone to my religion, (which, as I said, is not atheist), I simply feel that christianity is a religion which is dangerous to both people who believe in it, and to people that don't believe in it, but live around people that do believe in it.
In the US conservative christians are constantly trying to turn their beliefs into laws that everyone would have to live by. These laws are not based on logic or reason, but only superstition. These laws are almost always detrimental to society. Beyond that, christianity has a nasty tendency to exacerbate the effects of mental illness.
Beyond that, it is quite obviously a false religion. People tend not to be able to face this fact due to societal pressure and wishful thinking.
I don't think that the disappearance of christianity would magically solve all of the world's problems. However, it would help solve some of them.
I strongly suspect that the average atheist could not care less what you believe. However, since christians constantly target atheists, the atheists respond to this in self defense.

I really doubt that atheists are trying to de-convert people. I think they are asking and answering questions that make us think.
I really doubt that many atheists have faith. Faith is the belief without evidence. Most atheists I have met do not believe without evidence. Atheists do not have a belief system. There is no belief. There is no system. There is only disbelief in gods.
Hope I was able to clarify the issue to you.

There is no "atheist" faith, first of all. And talk about trying to convert people? Look at your avatar. Christians are the most offensive group of people on the planet. I know. Thumbs down and warning comiing. But the garbage that gets spewed out, the constant attempts to erode the Constitution and to force YOUR way of living on everyone else is just offensive. Then you have the unmitigated nerve to ask a question like this?
What's that thing about glass houses or throwing the first stone? Give it a rest.

I wouldn't say all atheists are that way.
I was one for sometime, and now I'm not sure what I am. But then again that might have something to do with my decesion to change perspective. I was surrounded by atheists, and they were as you describe...pushy. I myself was very much against being so, but I was definitely willing to share my view when asked. I think that had a lot to do with my willness to see other views (while my friends tended to be mentally isolated).
I think any belief can come with a desire to spread it. Sometimes it's a matter of mild communication and help, and other times it can be violent and forceful. I think all beliefs can range on that spectrum. So I wouldn't generalize a belief system, although I'm sure it's based on your experience...and I'm sure to some level it does exist.
Make sense?

Christians have been trying to convert others to their faith, with mass propaganda, for the last 2000 years.
Atheists are just presenting the facts, and allowing others to draw their own conclusions. No faith is necessary to lack belief.

Atheism isn't a faith. It is a stance. I imagine they question Christians because some Christians try to convert them to their belief system. Some do it quite rudely by calling them names and saying that anyone who doesn't believe the same way they do will go to hell.

Atheism is disbelief. Atheists have no beliefs to push on anyone.
Atheists reject belief for many reasons ranging from ignorance to anger to skepticism.
Some atheists find theistic belief systems to be destructive to the human social condition and feel obligated to voice their concerns but they have no belief system to push on anyone.
Oddly, when theistic people share their beliefs, the action is viewed by them as commendable, but when atheists express their disbelief, they mislabelled as "pushing their beliefs on everyone".

Atheists aren't pushing some superstitious religion that focuses around taking the thinking out of life. Life has mysteries, period, and Christians want to believe they know every answer just because some book that could've easily been written by some B.C. hobos told them so. It's time to quit being retarted and get lives. That's why.

Because it's what every other religion does. It's about being proud of their faith and defending the existance of their faith. The bad side is when people "force" their faith into others. People should know how to respect the beliefs of others and I assure you more peace. =]
Cheers.

Other way around. When religious zealots demand that I convert to their point of view I just ask a few simple questions, the responses to which are always "you just have to have faith.'
When I call faith a suspension of reason, they usually get mad and accuse me of one vile thing or another and tell me I'm going to hell.
Why would I want to associate with those kind of people?
