During lunch hour at school, a group of five boys from Miss Jones' home room visited a nearby lunch wagon. One of the five boys took a candy bar without paying for it. When the boys were questioned by the school principal, they made the following statements in respective order:

1. Rex: "Neither Earl nor I did it."

2. Jack: "It was Rex or Abe."

3. Abe: "Both Rex and Jack are liars."

4. Dan: "Abe's statement is not true; one of them is lying and the other is speaking the truth."

5. Earl: "What Dan said is wrong."

When Miss Jones was consulted, she said, "Three of these boys are knights, but two are liars." Assuming that Miss Jones is correct, can you determine who took the candy bar?

I know it's Abe, but can you tell me why?

I don't understand how to come to the solution that it was Abe. Can someone explain it in detail please?

The key is finding who the two liars are. If Abe is telling the truth, then Rex and Jack are the liars, however, that means Dan is a knight but Earl, who is also a knight, suggests that Dan is a liar. That makes 3 liars, which conflicts with Miss Jones saying there are 3 knights and 2 liars. Therefore, the

1st Liar = Abe

You can then reverse Abe's statement and get Both Rex and Jack are Not liars, which gives you

1st Knight = Rex
2nd Knight = Jack

If both Rex and Jack are knights, then Dan's statement sugesting one is a liar and one is a knight, becomes a lie. Therefore, we come to

2nd Liar = Dan
3rd Knight = Earl

If Rex and Jack are knights, then

Earl = not the culprit
Rex = not the culprit
Rex = a suspect
Abe = a suspect

If Rex is not the culprit, then he is no longer a suspect. Therefore the only suspect left is Abe. Because Dan is not accused

Abe = the theif who took the candy bar

assuming that none of the statements is not a half truth
then rex statement is true because only one boy took the candy
then dans statement is a lie
abe's statement is a lie
so rex, jack, and earl is telling the truth
so if jack's statement is true abe took the candy
cause jack said it was rex or abe
rex said he and earl didnt take it both are telling the truth
so rex didnt take it leaving abe to take it

because if you know 3 are truthful and 2 are not, then you can compare the answers and say, "If that one is true, then those two must be false, but they can't be false, because one is true. I know that, because if it were false, then 3 would be liars, but only 2 are." It's logic.
