I have an RCA 46 inch projection Tv model p46924 that doesn't turn on. Someone said I probably need a new transformer. What is it? What does it do? Where is it located?

There are many types of transformers. Not a single one converts AC to DC as one person appears to be suggesting (above). That job is reserved for rectifiers (diodes).

As TV Tech guy suggests, the chances of a transformer failing on that model are extremely remote. The ONLY transformer I've ever seen go bad on an RCA made after the seventies, was the horizontal drive transformer, and all it had was a loose core which made it noisy. Also, as he suggests, the chances of a bad capacitor or diode in the 15 volt supply are quite good. Either way, a tech will have to look at it.

If you want to learn about what transformers do, go to www.howstuffworks.com. If you want your TV fixed, call an experienced technician... you could try it yourself, but be prepared for what is likely to happen.

Unless the " someone " was an experienced TV Tech you can take his ( or her ) diagnosis with a very large pinch of salt ! To answer your basic question though " what is a Tv transformer " ? I will list a few transformers that can be found in a TV set.!
Mains AC transformer already described by TV Guy !
Sound IF transformers ( 2 or 3 )
Vision IF transformers " "
Power supply switching transformer !
Line drive transformer .
Flyback Transformer
A couple or so in the tuner unit.
No doubt I have missed a couple and will be picked up on it by the other TV Techs who may decide to answer this question but you get the idea don`t you !!
Cheers Pete
To be fair Adrian he did say " with other circuitry ".
Cheers Pete

A transformer is part of the power supply. Takes AC from the wall and with other circuitry transforms it to DC power for the TV components.

Just call a repairman. Don't attempt to fix it on your own.

That would be RARE for that model.....they just don't fail on that model.

MORE LIKELY it's the SPLITTER.....

or the 14 Volt Supply diode...

or the HORIZONTAL OUTPUT
the Pincushion capacitor...

Almost as rare, is the main power output and the driver ic that gets whacked....

Sometimes it's the driver ic's caps....

Other times it's the 143 Volt Filter capacitor
on the secondary side of the SMPS gets dried out, and the TV won't turn on.....I've seen the DC voltage float around from 143 V up to 200 Volts when that cap dries out....

Wow.....LOOK at MY LIST of possibilities on your model....
A good TV Tech can check them all....and find out WHY your TV is actually dead.....

MOST LIKELY the transformer isn't even bad....IN FACT I'd Bet MY PAYCHECK on it !!
