It's usually an excuse someone uses when someone else doesn't have the same emotional attachment to something that you do.
We all have emotions, but we all value things differently.

They have lost all sense of feeling for others. But stone is not unbreakable. With the right tools, even stone can be broken and God loves a broken and contrite heart.
I have seen people like that in my life...Life just knocked them around so much, they just refuse to be hurt anymore by anyone. But Thank God, that doesn't mean they can't be reached....it just takes the right words, the right person to penetrate that heart. They probably have a river of tears stored up. You can tell when someone like that, comes to Jesus.....they will cry buckets of tears...

a stone while seeming 'dead' is still moving, usually cold, and seeming unresponsive
but when it's full of love or energy, hope it warms up and become fluid again, responsive to others and sharing and engaging
some stones are of different materials, like hard diamonds or other precious stones, and others are granite, limestone or other building blocks....just a thought
I think heart of stone is generally associated with a indifferent or cold hearted/mean spirited person devoid of love
but I think it can be other things depending upon perspective

Here in Texas we've got fossils that are commonly spoken of as a "Cowboy's Heart." They're actually a prehistoric clam, but the shape is a 3 dimensional valentine heart. They are cold, hard, and always rather heavy. When some young'un comes a cryin' she's been jilted I'll give her one of the hearts from my collection.

I can think of two ways you could see this. It could be that this person is unfeeling......that they don't care what happens as long as they get what they want. And that they don't feel the emotions that make a per son a good person like sympathy, empathy, love, forgiveness........ The other is that this person has faced so much pain that they learned to harden their heart as in they built a defense around their heart. So they're not bad people.....they're just protecting themselves. Hope this helps!

In direct opposition to "God writing His laws across the tablets of our heart."
The heart of stone is cold, not flexibility, without love, conscience dulled. The heart of stone lacks personal relationship with Christ, often with others.
The soft heart is in contact and walks in in the Holy Spirit, soft, pliable, soft to touch, quick to be genuine and sincere, yielding, bending.

I am reminded of Ezekiel 36:26
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

I think of a cold, uncaring person...maybe someone who has been so badly hurt that he has shut down his emotions to protect himself...
I think that a "heart of stone" must be a terrible burden to carry around...
You're welcome.
(We're all writers here, I guess...)

Biblically it means that their heart is closed to the idea of God. Pharaohs heart was hardened when God brought his plagues onto Egypt through Moses. The Jews hearts were hardened when they requested the Romans to put Jesus to death.

a stone is only hard as long as you don't get to know it.... when you befriend someone with a heart of stone then they are sturdy dependable friends... unbreakable..... exactly like a stone is..
