had drug and or substance problems,have berated her fought with each other and she is still trying to be polite.cordial want your attention etc.....What does that mean.

It means she can see some good in you despite your faults. She seems kinder to you than yourself.

Sometimes you see the potential in a person and that is enough to keep you interested and willing to stick around through the hard times...
OR
She has mental issues and your arguments and berating are filling a need for her that she does not realize she has. It happens all the time.
My advice..be nice and make a concerted effort NOT to fight or berate this girl. If she draws you in to that type of situation..she has an issue that needs to be uncovered. If not...then be glad you found someone who is willing to stick it out with you and be nicer..she deserves it!

Not only is she human, she believes in you and not the monster you were when you were on the Marching Powder. It means she would like to get to know you now that you're not intoxicated. She's giving you a chance, now be nice and give her a chance back.
