I would have to say hardness of their heart. When Jesus walked on the water,he had just performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000, yet the people had forgot that miracle, & the Bible says because of the hardness of their heart, they did not believe.

And sin..,",the Bible will keep you from sin: or sin will keep you from the Blble", Evangelist,Lester Rolloff

I cannot imagine anyone that has known God to turn away from Him. NO matter what awful happens to us, it is not God, it is ppl hurting us that dont believe in obeying God.
I couldnt stand one moment of life without Gods presence right here with me. NO reason to live or go on. Butyou know what, if God told me I was lost, I would still serve Him, as I love Him that much and I would still want to tell others about Him. I love Him more than life itself and I pray others will learn to trust , know HIm, and love Him that way too, the way He loves us. And no I am not lost. My salvation is assured. you know why? Cuz, I not only believe and love God, but I obey all He tells me to do because He is God and He knows whats best for me, and all of us.
If you knew today you have an hour to live folks, what would you do? ? Just a thought for those that dont belive, what if you are wrong? YOu are risking so much At least you should study for a long time and pray and see if God is real, because when you seek HIM< you will find HIM.
Run to JEsus today, and HE will set you free, heal and deliver you and save you. So much to gain, and so much to lose when you dont hear and obey. God forbid that any will be lost, but its all choice.. Remember God iseager to forgive tho. Run to Him and ask...

it would seem that the world is having a nervous breakdown.
too many want God to be their little genie in the sky.
when God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt.
He did it with one miracle after the other, but each time the came upon a difficulty.. they forgot about every thing that He had done before, and wanted to return to Egypt, and back into slavery.
when he gave them manna from heaven, they longed the the garlic and onions of Egypt.
while Moses was on mount sinai, the wanted a God that they could see, and built a golden calf.
even Moses wanted a God that He could see, and ask to see Him on the mount.
when Thomas heard the Jesus had risen, He want proof, he wanted the see the nail prints in his hand, and the wound in His side,
it would seem the the whole world has tried to adopt the Motto of Missouri. the show me state, and if God does not prove Himself the them, to grant the every whim, then they refuse to believe in Him.
more and more, people today, are acting like spoiled children, that throw a temper fit when God doesn't do everything that is ask of Him.

When you try and become God. Usurping God's authority. When a judge sentences a person because they are evil and not to protect society, then that judge has taken a small step toward becoming God. Of course we can only play God but to the usurper is feels very real. As an imperfect human we need to be humbled our infirmities. When we use perfect judgment we usurp God's authority because we are fallible.

A person would then turn from God rather than face the humility they need to be with God. After being a God, even in pretend, it is hard to go back to being a person.

Hey girl!
I cannot think of a justifiable reason to turn away from God especially once you've established a relationship with Him. But for some it could be from blaming God for every negative thing that has happened in their life. I've heard of that happening. Personally I blame it on the devil. He is out to kill, steal and destroy and loves it when someone says they don't believe anymore because......
And as George said, people want physical proof that God exists but all we need is faith and open eyes to see what God does do for us.
By the way George, I resent that remark. I live in Missouri . Oh, I love ya anyway. You know that!

Our existence is enough evidence of a creator... no brainer. We call our creator: God, the almighty superior being =)

Here's a quote from one of God's creation, an Atheist human being.

"There are two types of people in this world:
Religious people that are not intelligent and
Intelligent people that are not religious"

People seem to lose their faith in God, IMHO, because GOD has not communicated with anyone that's alive in OUR LIFE TIME. Only 2000 years ago in all of history.

Religion means different things to people, so does the word "God". We seek definitions, but some things cannot be expressed through words, writing, sound waves...

My opinion, God's Language isn't English, Arabic, Chinese or through sound. It's is cellular and molecular.

And our Heart and Brain speaks two different languages. Which one would you listen to?

There are as many reasons for people turning away from G-d, as there are for others to turn toward Him.

I am curious about why you think you "could stand living without the presence of G-d"?

Or did you mean to say 'you couldn't stand living without the presence of G-d in your life'?

A love for ones self above a love of God. You convince yourself that your not that bad and live a moral life without God, so you decide that you dont want his help in your life. As a compromise you decide not to worship God. The problem is there will be a judgment and God will hold you accountable of your sins.

edit: I wrote this to you, then realized that you were asking about unbelievers, so it isn't directed at you anymore

Good grief!
You could not even take your next breath without God in your life.
The only reason people turn their backs on God is because God didn't live up to THEIR expectations.
That just tells me they never knew God in the first place; they have believed in a god of their own making rather than the God of the Bible.

I can think of nothing that would turn ME away from God. But many of my gay brothers and sisters have been turned away by those who use God to promote homophobia. A good example would be the mega-church in Arlington, Texas, which just cancelled a memorial service for a gay Vet, after agreeing to do it. There justification of such a rude, unloving action was that they did not want to appear to "condone" homosexuality.

This is the type of behavior which pushes many away from Christ and only demonstrates the immorality and sinfulness of homophobia.
