Most distributions don't work that way. Almost everything that you could want can be found through the package manager. If it can't, then you could possibly still install it if:

1. It is a .deb file, and you are on a Debian-based system, like Ubuntu or MEPIS.
2. It is a .rpm file, and you are on a Red-Hat based system, such as Fedora or Yellow Dog.
3. It is a source tarball, often with a ".tar.gz" extension, in which case you can compile it yourself, provided you know how (which is not TOO difficult).

The only distro that I am aware of that installs programs in a format similar to what you are probably used to is PC-BSD (which is not actually Linux, but a similar open-source *nix).

Edit:

1. I'm pretty sure you can install Beryl through Synaptic. i don't use that package manger, but there should be some place for you to type in what you are looking for.
2. Many wireless cards do not have Linux drivers available, so they must use Windows drivers with a program called "ndiswrapper."

It depends on your distribution. Since you are using Ubuntu and it is Debian based the answer is no. Debian based distros use apt get and .deb files for most installations, it is very rare to need to use a tar ball with a Debian based system.

Here is a link with instructions on how to install it on Debian. While it will not be exact, it should be similar enough for you to figure out. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=9735

I would recommend you use IRC to chat with Ubuntu users live, so your questions would be answered better. Also many times experienced users can give you tips and work arounds you will not be able to find anywhere else. Simply install an IRC client, there are several of them. I use Chatzilla because it is an extension for Firefox. the address you want is irc://irc.freenode.net once logged into the server you need to register a user name. Then you will need to type either /join #ubuntu or /join #beryl

Also Linux in general has a very difficult time with wireless networking due to proprietary drivers. Once again IRC in the Ubuntu channel should be able to help you fix this problem.

It really depends on what distribution of Linux you're using -- if you're new to *nix, I recommend Ubuntu -- it does all the work for you if you use the Package Manager for downloading/installations.

What distro do you use? If you log into your terminal via telent, you have to be physically at the station. However if it is physical access you have, make sure you are logged in as root. The default account you get isn't root, you have to lock your current session via the server, then log in with "root" as the userid and your current password to the default account!
