A reasonable and interesting question was asked, with the clear indication that no it was not intended to be a racially offensive or discriminatory question.
I can't beieve the number of you (on both sides) that turned it into an insult competition and calling the other "worthless trash" etc.
You should be ashamed of yourselves. Only a simple mind would apply generalisations and such insults to whole communities.
People should just concentrate on the question asked, without trying to offend others. Hence, yes I agree that if a person intends to migrate they should try to learn the language. However, it should not be mandatory. It is in the migrant's best interest to learn the language of his/her country of choice in order to be able to obtain work and function within the community.

If you intend to become a long-term resident, it would be adviseable, especially if you're going to be working. Certainly you should if you hope to become a citizen. If you're just visiting, or living in your mansion in the Hamptons for a couple of years to get away from the neighbors (you can just have a translator on your staff, anyway), or moving into a tight little ethnic enclave like a Chinatown or whatever, no, it doesn't really matter.

Yes, it is the primary business language for this country and if you work here you need to be able to communicate with your fellow workers who mostly speak only English!
Brian I live in southern NM and often enter stores where the staff does not speak English at all and have to wait to get someone from next door to translate. The business is where I get my Oxygen bottles refilled and it is dangerous for me to have to deal with it

Oh, I like how you think. You are so right. What these illegal or legal immigrants don't realize is that they will be kept in all the low paying jobs if they don't learn English. It is not being nice to them to accommodate their foreign language. This way all hotels will have housekeepers, restaurants will have dish washers, and construction companies will have roofers. You are not racist. You are intellegent and insightful. Again, I like how you think.

Yes you should learn American English. The British do not like their language to be tainted by that drivel you call English.
