I think it's only the stripey tabby cats that have those. My cat is a calico/tortie looking thing, so her head is speckled black and orange, like the rest of her.

I have read that all cats have tabby markings, underneath
their fur, as that's the way the original jungle and desert cats,
were marked.
As for the "m". I heard a legend:
The prophet Muhammed was sitting and dozing in his chair,
with his favourite cat on his lap. A scorpion came along, and
was going to get up onto the chair, maybe harming Muhammed. The cat leaped up, killed the scorpion, and came back purring to her person.
Muhammed was so pleased with his cat's protecting him,
he touched her forehead, and said, "From this day, all
cats will bear an M, so that all the world will know you are
blessed by the prophet."
True or not, I think it makes a great legend!

According to our vet when we were discussing the patterns of 2 of our cats, all cats have the similar markings. They have the same genetic template for markings. It's very complicated and still not fully understood. Different combinations of genes give different manifestations of patterns, but they always lay on the prescribed template.
On a tabby, this is clearly visible and includes the M, but this is not the same for all colours. On black or white cats, for example, you have to look very hard to see them but they are still there genetically.

No, just tabbies, orange or gray, the stripped tabbies all seem to have them.
